The 1990s (American Popular Culture Through History), by Marc Oxoby

The last decade of the millennium was, in many ways, the most diverse and fascinating in the history of American culture. Alternative subcultures gained unprecedented exposure, manifest in such phenomena as grunge music, gansta rap, hip-hop fashion, raves, extreme sports, and the art of Robert Mapplethorpe and Andres Serrano. Twin Peaks, The X-Files, and The Phantom Menace brought science fiction to the mainstream. Bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam spread the Seattle rock scene across America. And even coffeehouse culture went mainstream with the proliferation of the Starbucks chain. Ethnic minorities, youth culture, and homosexual society all achieved larger roles in shaping the American identity. Meanwhile, corporate America pressed onward in its never-ending search for high ratings, giant profits, and more bang for its buck.

The twelve narrative chapters in this book depict the United States as brought to you by Generation X―a culture busting out in new and unforeseen ways. The volume also includes chapter bibliographies, a timeline, cost comparisons, and lists of suggested further reading.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Marred by weak writing, this history seems anxious to say something but never quite gets there. The two sections cover "Life and Youth" and "Popular Culture" (which looks at everything from advertising to the visual arts). The book ends with a time line and a helpful list of products and their costs. While there is useful material here, much of it gets lost in the meandering and sloppy writing. Candace Bergen is referred to as Candace Bergman, and the WNBA receives little more than an aside in the approximately 350 words devoted to women in sports. Too verbose to be a ready-reference title, but too bland and lacking in analysis to be of any value as a history, this awkward hybrid lumbers along guaranteed to alienate even the most resolute researchers. Sara and Tom Pendergast's Bowling, Beatniks, and Bell-bottoms (UXL, 2002) is more inclusive, covering the entire 20th century; although the focus in Tandy McConnell's American Decades: 1990-1999 (Gale, 2000) isn't on popular culture, its format is better suited to student research.–Herman Sutter, Saint Agnes Academy, Houston, TX

Review
"Greenwood's Daily Life through History series has become a staple resource in many high-school, public, and academic libraries. American Popular Culture through History is recommended for the same libraries and should be equally well received."

Good series for decades research
By Penny thoughts
I bought this book because my daughter was doing research on the 1990's and there are not that many books with a decent amount of content out there. This series documents the decade in all aspects of life, government, natural disasters, politics and everything in between.
