On the surface, the American newspaper industry appears to have changed little from 1945 to 1965, remaining both healthy and prosperous. The number of newspapers in 1965 was about the same as in 1945, while during the twenty-year period advertising revenues increased substantially despite new competition from television. Just as in 1945, the vast majority of newspapers went to press with improved but old-fashioned letterpress methods in 1965. And newspaper reporters still professed a strong, if now somewhat shaken, faith in the federal government at the end of the twenty years.

But the surface appearance of both stability and profitability obscured profound change. In the two decades after World War II, the business of newspaper publishing changed significantly in myriad ways. By 1965, editors and publishers had recognized the extent of these changes and were beginning to adjust. Each of the changes was significant of its own accord, and the range of challenges throughout the period combined to transform newspapers and the nation they served by 1965. This transformation was evident, to varying degrees, in newspapers' content, their production methods, their economic position within the overall media marketplace, and their relationship with government. Newspapers - some more than others - made strides to keep up with and overcome some of these challenges. But in each of these areas, newspapers as a group were slow to respond to the problems facing journalism.

Each state's experiences with multicultural education vary, and states have emphasized multicultural education to greater and lesser degrees. This reference book is a guide to multicultural education initiatives in the 50 states.

After an introductory essay on the development of multicultural education programs, the volume presents alphabetically arranged entries on the status of multicultural education in each state. Because the programs in each state have developed in response to the particular characteristics and experiences of the state's population, each entry begins with a brief history that places special emphasis on the state's cultural groups. The second section discusses the state's educational system, since the system provides a framework for the state's multicultural education initiatives. The third section analyzes the state's creation and implementation of multicultural education policies and programs and draws on responses to a questionnaire. Each entry closes with bibliographic references, and the volume concludes with a selected, general bibliography.

This book fit the bill. It is both a good outline and a discussion of historical, social, political and other matters. I recommend it to anyone interested in this country.

The book demonstrates that each category is different from the others, and that novels within categories are similar. Thus it provides a coherent vision of Selvon's canon. It illustrates, as well, the development of Selvon's philosophy of West Indians as peasant, bourgeois, and immigrant. In doing so, it explores the significance of ethnicity in his works and discusses Selvon's imaginative apotheosis of the Indo-Trinidadian peasant and the diminution of the Afro-Trinidadian immigrant. The volume also studies Selvon's fictional and rhetorical techniques and argues that his works range from Bildungsroman to picaresque to epic to satire.

Best overview of the background of the gay rights movement

This book goes behind the headlines of current issues like same-sex marriage, gay rights controversies, and religious attitudes, to give a comprehensive understanding of the history of the gay and lesbian rights movement. It includes a comprehensive selection of documents, from the early colonial period to the present, tied together with historical explanations that put these sources into clear perspective. Clearly written and astute, this book helped me learn more about the Native American respect for same-sex relationships, the roots of Christian opposition to same-sex love, and the conflict between those values and the American ideology of individual freedom and liberty.
The authors show that the modern gay rights movement began in the years after World War II in Los Angeles, rather than in the commonly believed 1969 Stonewall uprising. They argue that this movement built upon and is a continuation of the larger movements for freedom and equality as applied to people of color and to women. For a comprehensive understanding of the most important human rights struggle of contemporary America, this book is required reading. I recommend it highly.
