About the Author

JOHN CORRIGAN is Professor of Religious Studies and American Studies at Arizona State University. He has served as regular or visiting faculty at the University of Virginia, Harvard, Oxford, The University of London, University College (Dublin) and the University of Wittenberg-Halle. He is the author or coauthor of eight books on academic subjects and has written three screenplays produced for cable television. He is coeditor of the online Journal of Southern Religion, codirector of The American Religious Experience web site, and North American religions editor of The Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, based at the University of California, Berkeley.

ERIC CRUMP is Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvannia. He is currently doing research on affectivity and faith in relation to a theological aesthetics as the intersection between pneumatology and theological anthropology.

JOHN KLOOS is Professor of Religious Studies at Benedictine College. He is the author of studies of popular religion, religious initiation, and public piety, and A Sense of Deity (1991), an interpretation of the social psychology of American revolutionary Dr. Benjamin Rush, M.D. Currently at work on the themes of rebirth and renewal in person and community, he is writing on the poetry of Seamus Heaney, and on stories of self-making in popular culture.

Exceptional research tool

The study of emotion currently is undergoing a renaissance across the arts and sciences. Some of the most interesting and original contributions have been in the area of religion and emotion. This bibliography documents work from diverse fields of the humanities, social sciences and especially psychology. The bibliography is the only one of its kind and is extensive. It is not exhaustive. This interdisciplinary work is a primary research tool for initial research in the affective aspects of religious studies. Recommended for research libraries.

About the Author

BARRY HANKINS is Professor of History and Director of Graduate Studies at Baylor University, Waco. He is the author or co-editor of New Religious Movements and Religious Liberty in America (2002), Uneasy in Babylon: Southern Baptist Conservatives and American Culture (2002), Welfare Reform and Faith-Based Organizations (1999), and God's Rascal: J. Frank Norris and the Beginnings of Southern Fundamentalism (1996).

Good, But Not Worth the Price

This book is way overpriced. For $45.00, one would expect a more in depth discussion of the Second Great Awakening and Trancendentalist Movement than a mere six chapters and twenty-two very brief biographies. Too expensive for its target audiance: the casual lay reader, and far too trivial for tha student or scholar.

Good, brief explanation of topics - but the price!

"The Second Great Awakening and the Transcendentalists" by Barry Hankins is a short overview of these two 19th century movements. General books on American History don't tell you enough to understand the movements, but you don't want to get overwhelmed with religious philosophy. Hankins provides insights into the two movements without getting overwhelmed with the topic, but it is too expensive to buy. In other words, this is a great book to check out of the library.

There are still some points that Hankins could have addressed. He calls the Second Great Awakening a response to deism, which makes sense as he defines it. I have also read that the Second Great Awakening is a response to rationalism, as was the First Great Awakening. Yet, rationalism is not mentioned in this book. In fact, it would have been nice if there had been a chapter devoted to the differences between the two Great Awakenings.

While Nathaniel Hawthorne is mentioned with the Transcendentalists, he certainly was not a proponent of the movement. This is not distinguished in the text. In fact, his short stay at Brook Farm was due to his desire to save money to marry Sophia Peabody (according to Wikipedia, which cites a book by Philip McFarland as its source). Hawthorne's novel, The Blithedale Romance, was critical of the movement. Hankins should have taken a few paragraphs to discuss Hawthorne's involvement, and criticism, of Transcendentalism.

Hankins also provides some nice details about the businessman's revival of 1858, which some call part of a Third Great Awakening. It seems obvious, after the fact, to connect the revival to the Panic of 1857 and the incipient national crisis due to slavery, but these connections are not made.

There are some good connections, such as the Erie Canal to the burned-over district created by Charles Grandison Finney. Hankins explains the link to the reform movement from the Second Great Awakening. Reform doesn't just mean the education reforms of Horace Mann or the improvements in care for the mentally ill by Dorothea Dix, but also temperance, anti-slavery, women's rights, and moral reform (such as anti-dueling).

After the text, there are 22 biographies of 24 different people (one entry is provided for the Tappan brothers and the Grimké sisters.) An account of the history, structure, and operation of the First and Second Banks of the United States, this study examines how the banks performed as national and central institutions, and what happened to the economy when the charter of the Second Bank was allowed to expire in 1836. Historians have paid little recent attention to the early history of central banking in the United States, and many Americans believe that the Federal Reserve, created in 1913, was our first central bank. The economic crisis during the American Revolution actually led to the founding of a national bank, called the Bank of North America, during the period of Confederation. Although it became a private bank before the Constitution was ratified in 1788, it proved to be such a success that in 1791 Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, was able to convince President Washington that a similar bank should be established.

While the First Bank of the United States performed well during its tenure, its charter was allowed to lapse in 1811. A Second Bank of the United States was created five years later in 1816, and it prospered under the leadership of its third president, Nicholas Biddle, from 1823 to 1830, when central banking was practiced. This success ended with the 1828 election of Andrew Jackson, who refused to recharter the bank and withdrew the government's funds in 1833. Severely weakened, the Bank continued, but its charter finally expired in 1836, much to Biddle's dismay.

EDWARD S. KAPLAN is Professor in the Department of Social Science at New York City Technical College of the City University of New York. He has co-authored Prelude to Trade Wars: American Tariff Policy, 1890―1922 (Greenwood, 1994), authored American Trade Policy, 1923―1995 (Greenwood, 1996), U.S. Imperialism in Latin America: Bryan's Challenges and Contributions, 1900―1920 (Greenwood, 1998), and has written several articles on U.S. economic history.

As a personal favor to yourself, I recommend that you not buy this book.

I can be a very silly person.

At the moment, I am living abroad and thus in rather high reliance on the Amazon ebook collection. A truckload of paper to ship home would be an unwelcome burden, so I load up on Kindle books, a library that's significantly easier to tote around. This means that when I'm wanting to read a history of the Bank of the United States, I have to make do with the selection available to me.

Right now, this book is the second hit in the Kindle store when you enter the bank's name, and the only direct hit available. As of October, 2011, they're selling the ebook version for 89 bucks. Well, well. Not a book priced for popular consumption, but this isn't a terribly uncommon price for a genuine work of research, the dusty technical history, the sort written by tweed-wearing professors with more hair coming out their ears than still on their heads. I'm okay with a technical work, so I hit the button and coughed up the electronic cash for this electronic book.

What I failed to do was any research about what this book is. There was one utterly useless review already, no information whatever, just as likely to be written by the author's well-meaning mother than by a person who has actually cracked open the book and plowed in. But what the hey? There are not yet any other books available in the online store on the subject, and how bad could it be, anyway?

Sigh.

This is not, in fact, a dry but diligent work of deep scholarship about the First and Second Banks of the United States. It more closely resembles a collection of college freshman essays. This is not to say that the book is uninformative. The author does competent work paraphrasing the views of actual historians. But that's the entirety of this book: a paraphrase. It offers no in-depth economic analysis, no strong familiarity with original sources, and not the slightest hint of any originality. The author relies heavily -- not quite to the point of exclusivity but close enough -- on secondary sources. The author read a bunch of other history books, and then re-wrote what already existed.

To give an example, 15 of the 56 references for chapter 3 are to Raymond Walter's article "The Origins of the Second Bank of the United States" in the _Journal of Political Economy_. That includes the entire run of citations 46 to 56. Eleven citations in a row, 10 ibids back to back, not to a real document from history but to a single secondary source journal article. Woof.

Like I said, I am a silly person. There are warnings about this to anyone who takes the time to google this book before purchasing.

This kind of reliance on secondary sources is perfectly fine for a consumer-priced piece of pop history. Popularizers should make up in style what they lack in original research. But this book, all dressed up as a serious work, does not deliver. The prose style alternates between soporific and soulless, which is unacceptable in a work as expensive as this, which is nothing more than a redressing of other people's hard work and scholarship.

Save your money. Don't be silly like I was.

A great read for anyone with an interest in the history of the Bank of the US, or for US history buffs in general. Kaplan explores not only the patterns and general themes of the Bank's development and demise, but also some of the finer points of its history that add character to this intriguing story.

Named for the man who brought free higher education to city youths unable to afford the two local private colleges, Townsend Harris High School reminded generations of New Yorkers of the city's debt to him. Its mission was to prepare young men for success at City College, where education was free to graduates of the city's public high schools. The school's three year course was tough and rigorous. Students learned to survive and perform, or they left.

By the 1930s, Townsend Harris was synonymous for bright boys, students who scored high on the yearly Regents examinations, but whose athletic ability, hard as they tried, was something of a joke. The author traces the development of the preparatory school from the first years of its beginning in 1849 to its 1942 closing by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia amid much controversy.

A dear friend mentioned at dinner that he had attended Townsend Harris High....and had lost touch with a fellow student. Of course I did a little searching around on my computer and found this book, which he had not known existed. He was thrilled to receive it and is quite enchanted with the stories therein. This copy was at a great price and in lovely condition. A great gift!

An Old Grad Looks Back

For the three thousand or so living alumni of the original Townsend Harris High School, this book will evoke pleasant memories of classmates, teachers and a less structured educational era.
The book traces the journey through which the compulsory sub-freshman preparatory year for entering the New York Free Academy (renamed the College of the City of New York in 1866) evolved into a three-year Academic Department in 1905 and was soon moved into the newly-built Townsend Harris Hall on the City College campus. Housed separately from the rest of the college population, this "preparatory" schooltook on an identity of its own and was called Townsend Harris Hall until 1930; at which time it was moved to 23rd Street and renamed Townsend Harris High School.
While the historical aspects of the book are based on much original reserarch by the author, the anecdotal matter has been provided by personal interviews with former students and teachers, and 150 Townsend Harris alumni who responded (in some cases volubly) to a series of questionnaires. The mix of facts, memories and impressions succeeds in illuminating, to some extent, the special character of this unique school for New york's bright boys.
The question usually asked by someone who hears about Townsend Harris for the first time is: "Why did they close it?" The author provides the anser in the closing chapters. If Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's involvement in the original decision was more bureaucratic than personal, his later petulance and intransigence provide enough reason for casting him as the villain of the piece.
Perhaps te only quibble with this warm and wonderful work is that the author, having revealed WHY the school was closed, then proceeds to use the last quarter of the book to tell HOW it ws done. Getting the story straight will be important to the history-minded, but for those more interested in learning what a school for bright boys was really like, it could prove somewhat anticlimactic.
In its brief history (1905-1942), the original Townsend Harris gave us the Nobel Laureates, Herman Wouk, Jonas Salk, Ira Gershwin, Edward G. Robinson, Dam clayton Powell and a host of other prominent businessmen, educators, scientists, philanthopists, jurists and outstanding American citizens. Reading this book, you may wonder:"Why did they ever close Townsend Harris?"

World-systems theory and many other perspectives on the world economy, including international political economy and analysis of globalization, typically pay only limited attention to issues of space, location, and the role of transportation in the world economy. This book identifies key theoretical and empirical issues and provides the basis for formulating research strategies to address this gap in our understanding.

About the Author

PAUL S. CICCANTELL is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Kansas State University. His research interests include the role of natural resource industries and transport systems in economic development in Latin America, North America, and Japan, organizational analysis of global natural resource industries, and the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

STEPHEN G. BUNKER is Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin. He has done research on peasant economies in Uganda, Guatemala, Peru, and Brazil. His recent work focuses on the organization of natural resource extraction, transport, and trade.
