Presidents from Eisenhower through Johnson, 1953-1969: Debating the Issues in Pro and Con Primary Documents (The President's Position: Deba

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Communism and the Cold War pervaded almost every aspect of American policy and concern. Eisenhower's Highway Act sought to strengthen America with the sort of roads system and military advantage Germany's Autobahn provided in World War II; Kennedy looked to space, the Peace Corps, and the schools to improve America's actual and perceived status in the eyes of the world; LBJ continually found concerns about Southeast Asia pressing in upon him notwithstanding his desire to found a new Great Society in the United States. However, despite the Cold War and demands of international politics, these three presidents were continually involved in critical debates about the domestic future of America, and their roles and victories in these debates have left deep impressions upon American society. This volume provides readers with access to the primary documents―both foreign and domestic―that reflect the debates that have had such a strong influence in shaping the United States.

This resource covers thirty-two key issues and initiatives of the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson presidencies. An introductory overview of each president's administration provides a useful window through which to assess the specific debates and documents addressed, and each of these individual issues is also supplemented by a brief introductory discussion. Among the issues covered are: Eisenhower's attempt to establish a new look for national defense, the Eisenhower doctrine, and the National Defense Education Act; Kennedy's Alliance for Progress and Peace Corps programs, his role in Cuba, his plans for America in space, and his work on arms control and the Limited Test Ban Treaty; and Johnson's Civil Rights Act, Model Cities Program, war on poverty, and role in the ground and air wars in Vietnam. A timeline provides a chronological backdrop for the subject, and recommended readings following each section offer helpful direction for further study.

Review
"In 1958 a senator worries aloud that America is lagging in developing a satellite program. In 1961 undersecretaries try to persuade their boss that invading Cuba may be a bad idea. In 1965 senators from the South weigh in against the federal government's taking over local elections. This collection, which is part of a series intended for high school students and general readers, includes presidents describing the relationship between the US economy and war, various sides analyzing rebel uprisings overseas, legislators calling upon each other to support states' rights, and a representative of the AMA denouncing Medicare. Each entry includes a brief introduction and a very representative sampling of speeches, declarations and memos. However, the format makes it difficult for readers to sort out which are the primary documents and which are the introductions." - Reference & Research Book News

"This volume examines 32 major issues or presidential initiative from those times. With the Cold War, the atom bomb and deepening entanglements in Southeast Asia and Latin American, much of the discussion centers on foreign policy. However, the civil rights movement and presidential initiatives on highways, space, poverty and conservation provide ample range for domestic debates. The combination of high school teacher John King and college professor John Vile has produced a text that is accessible to students at both levels. Their historical analysis highlights not only the contemporary differences of opinions but also the frequently unexpected consequences of many policy decisions. The resulting guide encourages critical thinking on the part of the student, and will serve high school and college audiences well." - Lawrence Looks at Books

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–This well-written, concise resource details the events from 1775 to 1783 in five balanced chapters. Readers are presented with straightforward facts as they pertain to the events leading up to, during, and directly after the American Revolution, followed by a "Concluding Interpretive Essay." Three maps and a handful of black-and-white archival images from the Library of Congress do little to break up the rather dense, scholarly text. Extensive back matter, which includes 50 pages of biographical profiles of major figures, nearly 40 pages of primary documents, and an extensive annotated bibliography, all adds to the research value of this text. This is a solid title that can be used with Don Nardo's The American Revolution (Greenhaven, 1998).–G. Alyssa Parkinson, Highland Township Library, MI

An Excellent Survey Volume of the American Revolution
By Lori M. Netahlo
"The American Revolution"

Dr. Joseph C. Morton, Professor of History, Emeritus, at Northeastern Illinois University, has written a concise and thorough book entitled The American Revolution. This volume is one in a series of books in the "Greenwood Guides to Historic Events, 1500-1900" published by Greenwood Press.

Although this book is relatively small in volume at 218 pages, as opposed to texts such as The Glorious Cause by Robert Middlekauff at 700 pages, its small statute will not deter the reader from delving into a meticulous and truthful account of events that ushered in an "age of democratic revolutions."1

Morton's book commences with a marvelously detailed historical narrative overview permitting the reader to comprehend the political upheaval and disparity that led to the colonies actions prior to the dramatic military events of the Revolutionary War that ultimately gave America freedom from its English motherland.

What the book lacks is the details of the battles and skirmishes of the war. However, this is not a negative assessment of the book. It is obvious that the intent of the author was not to construct an all-encompassing volume on military tactics and battle particulars on the Revolutionary War. Dr. Morton's focus was to create a "survey" volume on the subject, which he has accomplished successfully. If a reader is seeking a detailed version of a battle, volumes on the market such as Decisive Day: The Battle for Bunker Hill by Richard M. Ketchum or The World Turned Upside Down: George Washington and the Battle of Yorktown by Richard Ferrie should be their focus.

In many books on the American Revolution and its aftermath, each author presents accurate historical events in his or her own light. Dr. Morton bestows to the reader a detail of the Boston Massacre, "... the famous, but misnamed..."2 This volume is one in a few that depict the truth of the "massacre" accurately with a small number of fatalities. One only needs to look at the engraving by Paul Revere in 1770 entitled "The Bloody Massacre" to understand how the entire event was blown out of proportion. Even in the American Heritage History of the American Revolution the detail and reality of the "Massacre" is not depicted in its authenticity. It is acknowledged only as a brief mention that the event was locally isolated and "...might have been buried except for...Samuel Adams..."3

A unique feature to Morton's book is the inclusion of a biographies section offering to the reader "a snapshot biography" on some of the main individuals in the revolutionary period. The inclusion of these biographies encourages further reading and research into this pivotal period of American history.

At the end of the book, (which would be an appendix) is a section that includes copies of many of the significant documents from the revolutionary period, each containing a small introduction on the document and its significance in the rebellion. For example, the Proclamation of Rebellion of August 23, 1775 demonstrates the colonies loyalty to the British crown by closing the document "God save the King"4 even after the incidents at Lexington Concord and Breeds Hill.

Conclusion

There is really nothing to criticize in The American Revolution. It is, in nearly every respect, an outstanding work of history. It is comprehensive in its' scope; thorough in its approach, obviously well researched and imbued with careful, thoughtful, and incisive historical analysis as noted in Morton's concluding interpretive essay.

With a plethora of excellent books written on the Revolutionary period, as historians, each book produces the authors view and story telling technique in a unique and varied way. I feel the only way to experience history is to read, analyze each volume on its own merit, and determine authenticity and content to meet our needs.

The American Revolution is a book that will delight the "hobbyist historian," students of history, both in the undergraduate and graduate level, and professional historian alike.

I must say in closing that Professor Morton's volume on the "necessary war"5 is by far one of the best complete and concise volumes of the topic that I have read. He truly is an expert in his craft of allowing us to enter "his world" of colonial America in its struggle for independence without bias and superfluous information.

The retelling of history is the art of enlightening and engaging the reader with stories that continue past our lifetimes. As William H. Hallahan states, "History is written not by the historians but by the people who lived it."6

Biographical Dictionary of Literary Influences: The Nineteenth Century, 1800-1914From Greenwood

Over the past two decades, the process of cultural development and, in particular, the role of reading has been of growing interest, but recent research has been episodic and idiosyncratic. In this biographical dictionary, research devoted specifically to the reading habits of 19th century individuals who shaped Western culture is brought together for the first time. While giving prominent coverage to literary and political figures, the volume's 270 entries also include musicians, painters, educators, and explorers. Each entry includes brief biographical information, a concise summary of literary influences on the subject, and clear direction for further research. The book provides a practical tool for scholars wishing to trace the reading experience of important Western cultural figures.

Subjects were selected from the people most responsible for the cultural development of Europe, Britain and the British Empire, and the Americas between 1800 and 1914. Although selective, the sample of 270 figures is substantial enough to suggest broad, cross-cultural habits and effects, enabling scholars to better understand the relationship between reading and culture. In an introductory essay, Powell explores the patterns and relationships that can be discerned from the entries. The first of three anticipated volumes, the book is an important step forward in researching the role of reading in cultural development.

Historical Dictionary of the 1950s, by James Stuart Olson

Today, Americans look back nostalgically at the 1950s, an era when television and rock and roll revolutionized popular culture, and Vietnam, race riots, drug abuse, and protest movements were still in the future. With homes in the suburbs, new automobiles, and the latest electrical gadgets, many Americans believed they were the most prosperous people on earth. Yet the era was tainted by the fear of thermonuclear war with the Soviet Union, deepening racial tensions, and discontent with rigid roles for women and the demands of corporate conformity. A sense of rebellion had begun to brew behind the facade. It manifested itself in rock and roll, the budding civil rights movement, and the appearance of a youth culture, eventually exploding in the 1960s.

Providing a comprehensive overview, this book includes entries on the prominent people, major events, issues, scandals, ideas, popular culture, and court cases of the decade that gave rise to the tensions of the 1960s.

Black Women Writers and the American Neo-Slave Narrative: Femininity Unfettered (Contributions in Afro-American & African Studies), by Eli

The neo-slave narrative is an important development in American literary history and has serious revisionist intentions at its foundation. This book examines how contemporary African American women writers have shaped the genre. These authors have written neo-slave narratives to reinscribe history from the perspective of the African American woman, most specifically the nineteenth century enslaved mother. The writers considered in this study―Sherley Anne Williams, Toni Morrison, J. California Cooper, Gayl Jones, and Octavia Butler―explore American slavery through the lens of gender, both to interrogate the myth that enslaved women, denied the privilege of having a gender identity by the institution of slavery, were in fact genderless, and to celebrate the acts of resistance which enabled enslaved women to mother in the fullest sense of the term.

The volume begins with an overview of historical representations of slavery in America, from the slave narrative itself to the revisionist scholarship of the 1960s. The book then examines several individual neo-slave narratives, such as Margaret Walker's Jubilee (1966), Williams' Dessa Rose (1986), Morrison's Beloved (1987), Cooper's Family (1991), Jones' Corregidora (1975), and Butler's Kindred (1979). What the women in these novels have in common is the fact that they mother; what the writers have in common is a tendency to utilize subversive strategies such as reversal, blurring, and the creation of myth to dramatize gender identity and to highlight the varied nature of motherhood as enslaved women experienced it. The final chapter evaluates the influence of the neo-slave narrative on American literature in general and on popular perceptions and misperceptions of African American women.

Silver and Gold: The Political Economy of International Monetary Conferences, 1867-1892 (Contributions in Economics & Economic History)B

For many observers of international politics, the classical gold standard is the premier example of successful international monetary cooperation. Curiously, most studies portray this 19th century system as a spontaneous development. Reti, after a thorough investigation of diplomatic records, argues that the gold standard grew out of several years of international negotiation. At the Conference of 1867, delegates for 20 states debated the monetary standard and agreed to adopt gold as soon as possible. In response to worldwide deflation from 1873 to 1896, the Conferences of 1878, 1881, and 1892 reconsidered the merits of gold, and the leading states reaffirmed their adherence to the gold standard. Reti uses theories of international regimes to explain the roles of hegemonic power, domestic politics, and causal beliefs on conference diplomacy. He asserts that the classical gold standard can best be understood as a coordination game in which negotiations informed nations about how to cooperate.

.,."recommended to anyone who wishes to become informed of diplomatic efforts to resist the dominant market and political forces reflected in the above data."-EH.NET

"Stylized facts are the enemy of serious scholarship. In this important study of the gold standard, Steven Reti provides the necessary corrective: a scrupulously documented account of the international diplomacy and domestic policies leading to the emergence of that international regime. Monetary theorists and political scientists concerned to get their facts right should pay it close attention."-Barry Eichengreen John L. Simpson Professor of Economics and Political Science University of California, Berkeley

"Steven Reti has scoured the sources for the four major international monetary conferences of the late 19th century in the hope of clarifying the processes of coordination and cooperation among governments in critical matters--in this case, the standard of money. His affirmation of coordination-game theory, rather than alternative hypotheses, goes far to explain the persistence and spread of the international gold standard before World War I."-Walter Nugent Andrew V. Tackes Professor of History University of Notre Dame

"This fine book orchestrates an important and interesting integration of theory and careful historical analysis to explain developments in a long unappreciated subject in international political economy: monetary relations before World War I. Reti marshals a theoretical argument that nicely synthesizes game theory (coordination games) and hegemonic stability theory to account for important changes in monetary regimes in the late nineteenth century. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the political economy of money."-Giulio M. Gallarotti Professor of Government Wesleyan University

"With this comprehensive reconstruction of 19th century monetary diplomacy, Steven Reti breaks new ground in the historiography of the classical gold standard. With meticulous care he documents the key role that multilateral negotiations played in the origins and functioning of the pre-World War I currency order, adding new insight to recent debates over the political economy of interstate cooperation. This book is a must-read for all students of international monetary history."-Benjamin J. Cohen Louis G. Lancaster Professor of International Political Economy University of California, Santa Barbara

"Steven Reti's Silver and Gold is an excellent study of the international politics of monetary policy under the classical gold standard....He analyzes [the] international monetary conferences in fascinating and informed detail, showing how the central role of the United Kingdom, domestic politics, and the ideas of policymakers interacted to help sustain the gold standard. [This book] is an engaging, careful study of a crucial period in international monetary history. Both its subject and its approach are of great relevance to understanding today's international monetary relations."-Jeffry A. Frieden Professor of Government Harvard University

"Bimetallism has lately attempted an intellectual comeback since the 1870s at the hands of Milton Friedman and Marc Flandreau of Paris....Silver and Gold suggests that the issues were more complicated than American and/or French 'Crimes of 1873.' Reti...approaches the issue from domestic politics, international-relations theory, and to a lesser extent economic analysis, and concludes that the four international conferences to resolve the issue...led inexorably to the gold standard winning out over unilateral bimetallism in the US after France gave up....A solid contribution to financial history and international politics."-Charles P. Kindleberger Ford International Professor of Economics, Emeritus Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Transrealist Fiction: Writing in the Slipstream of Science (Contributions to the Study of Science Fiction and Fantasy), by Damien Broderic

Transrealist writing treats immediate perceptions in a fantastic way, according to science fiction writer and mathematician Rudy Rucker, who originated the term. In the expanded sense argued in this book, it also intensifies imaginative fiction by writing the fantastic from the standpoint of richly personalized experience. Transrealism is also related to slipstream writing, another category introduced into studies of speculative fiction to account for texts that seem to follow trajectories mapped by the huge body of science fiction accumulated in the last century, while retaining a central interest in traditional literary strategies.

This book examines a variety of work from the transrealist perspective, something that has not been done previously. It emphasizes the texts of Philip K. Dick and Rucker himself, while it additionally engages the texts of such slipstream writers as Kurt Vonnegut, J.G. Ballard, and John Barth. It places its argument against the antihumanist trend in science fiction and builds comparisons with more traditional varieties of science fiction works.

The first appendix, "Frequency of Usage of Concepts as Sampled in Psychology Textbooks, 1885^-1996," provides supplementary material on many laws and theories not included in the dictionary itself and will be helpful to students and scholars concerned with specialty areas in psychology. There are more than 800 laws and theories in this appendix; the total time period is broken down into five separate subperiods. A second appendix lists the 136 textbooks surveyed for the collection of laws and theories listed in appendix A. A selected bibliography and index conclude the work.

Roeckelein, a professor of psychology in the Department of Psychology at Mesa Community College, Mesa, Arizona, is to be commended for his appreciation of semantic and theoretical distinctions. Although the mid-1990s have seen the publication of several dictionaries and encyclopedias in psychology, some of which are revisions of important titles, none of these titles represents serious competition for this scholarly dictionary. The Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology [RBB D 15 96], although full of useful information for anyone who is interested in psychology, is more appropriate to high-school students and general readers seeking an understanding of the concepts of academic psychology as employed by experts in the field. Billed as a dictionary for psychologists, Stuart Sutherland's second edition of The International Dictionary of Psychology [RBB Ap 1 96] attempts to include all technical terms from psychiatry, neurology, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, ethology, sociobiology, genetics, linguistics, artificial intelligence, sociology, anthropology, statistics, philosophy, and other disciplines. Benjamin B. Wolman's concise, current Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Psychoanalysis [RBB Je 1 97] and Raymond J. Corsini's reliable four-volume Encyclopedia of Psychology [RBB S 15 94] also pose no competition because they differ in both scope and purpose. Written with the broadest possible audience in mind, and containing some 17,000 terms, the second edition of Arthur S. Reber's Penguin Dictionary of Psychology (1995) is considerably less focused and more wide-ranging than Roeckelein's work, and also more weighty and cumbersome.

This dictionary should be a valuable addition to college and university library collections, particularly those that support programs in psychology and related fields. Large public libraries may want to take a look-see to determine its potential usefulness in their settings.

Rare Details about Experimental Psychology
By R.H.Page
When I Googled 'essential identity of the nerve impulse', this rare beauty popped up, showing details I remembered from graduate school. I bought a used copy which arrived in very good condition. After feasting on its scrumptious details, I tried to find just the right place for it in my voluminous library. Ahhh! Just the right place! OMG, it's already there!! Yes, I had already bought the book and it just shows you how useful it would be to be able to 'text-search' your own books! Which is why I buy mostly Kindle editions nowadays!
