Controversies of the Music Industry: (Contemporary Controversies), by Richard D. Barnet, Larry L. Burriss, Paul D. Fischer

This work presents 12 of the most volatile ethical issues facing the music industry. Real-life examples depict both sides of each controversy, and the list of resources provides tools for readers who wish to pursue the controversies further. Primary sources including court cases and excerpts from speeches help students build critical thinking skills in current issues, persuasive writing, and debate classes.

Among the controversies noted is the growing oligopoly of a few multinational music companies and the independent labels that are attempting to survive this market dominance. Drug abuse and violence depicted in music is discussed, as is its influence on young listeners. These issues and many more are discussed in detail as the authors outline the controversial topics of the music industry.

Could be so much better
By jessica loranger
In just reading one chapter, I find myself wanting a red pen for so many things--sometimes for word choice, awkward wording, and sometimes for questionable content. First in my mind: the sentence that suggests Nirvana's cover of "The Man Who Sold the World" might be "music of the 1999 war in Kosovo"(p51) and that Clinton and Milosevic "could have been the targets of Nirvana's version." Um, yes could have been, if in fact Kurt Cobain had been alive in 1999!! This is a major oversight. Maybe there is something I am missing--something the authors are not telling me or something I just don't know about the connections between the Nirvana cover and the 1999 Kosovo conflict. Either way, the authors are not giving me enough (or correct) information. One other point of contention (sure there are others but this one is memorable)--the conjecture that "...the notion of music as message is of fairly recent origin [in the United States I assume they mean] and can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s [with] artists such as Woody Guthrie." (p49) We all know how influential Guthrie truly was, but how about the labor movement of the early 1900s and Joe Hill? Just leave that out...And so it goes in this book. Still some material worth reading (a rare discussion of music and the first Gulf War, industry-related topics), but check it out from the library and skim it. Not super scholarly--written for high school/college undergrads. Easier to understand than many academic books, but carelessly written.

Great for students doing history papers
By Quality Hunter
I showed the other review to a professor with a Ph.D. in English Composition, and he said that it is a joke. Probably a high school English teacher who has never written a chapter, let alone a book.
