The first part of the book deals with increasing societal complexity and contains chapters on its overall development, the complexity of brain-environment interaction loops, organizational change, the development of human values, and the increasing interpenetration of societal subsystems. The second part concentrates on a current issue in sociocybernetics: autopoiesis, or self-production. The chapters included in Part II concentrate on embodied cognition, on the applicability of autopoiesis to business firms, on its roots in Aristotelian philosophy, and on the possibility of societal control and steering in democratic societies. Part III, more focused on methodology, discusses the difficulties inherent in observing complex social systems. The chapters deal with the problems of cross-cultural comparative research, simulation of the evolution of social systems, longitudinal simulation of education systems, and the methodological difficulties associated with analyzing the unexpected complexities of mutually interacting nonlinear systems.

About the Author

FELIX GEYER headed the methodology section of SISWO,(Institute for the Social Sciences), and has been retired since 1998. He is an honorary fellow of the World Organization of General Systems and Cybernetics and serves on the editorial board of the journal Kybernetes. Geyer was also executive secretary and member of the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association, He has published extensively in the fields of alienation theory and General Systems Theory/sociocybernetics.

JOHANNES VAN DER ZOUWEN is a professor in the Social Research Methodology department at Free University, The Netherlands. He is an honorary fellow of the World Organization of General Systems and Cybernetics and a member of the editorial board of its official journal Kybernetes. He has edited or coedited five books and published numerous articles and book chapters.

It details the Navy's role in planning for successful operations, its constant vigil against surprise attack, and its daily contribution to the maritime interception effort to enforce U.N. economic sanctions against Iraq.

Naval forces upheld the sanctions at sea in such a way as to avoid disabling a civilian ship and provided the glue that helped create and maintain the multi-national coalition. The complexity of the situation required the naval forces to adapt their command and control to a highly centralized operation which placed unprecedented demands on the Navy's communications systems. This study provides an insider view of the various plans, even those that were not carried out, and valuable insights into the personalities of the leading officials. Sources include first-hand observations of the events at ComUSNavCent, where the author had access to nearly all events and decisions; hundreds of thousands of messages and other briefing materials; the post-war analysis done by the Center for Naval Analyses; and interviews with almost all of the key players.

About the Author

MARVIN POKRANT has been a military operations research analyst for more than 20 years./e After joining the Center for Naval Analyses, he had field tours with Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet, Commander Third Fleet, and Commander Seventh Fleet. After Desert Storm, Dr. Pokrant coordinated CNA's reconstruction of Desert Shield and Desert Storm with the Seventh Fleet staff. Later, as Director of CNA's Fleet Tactics and Capabilities Program from 1992 to 1994, he oversaw many follow-on analyses of issues raised during Desert Storm. Dr. Pokrant is now retired.

Following up on their Multicultural Writers from Antiquity to 1945: A Bio-Bibliographical Sourcebook (Greenwood, 2001), Amoia and Knapp now offer Multicultural Writers since 1945: An A-to-Z Guide, which presents signed, brief biocritical essays of 102 authors. Not only have the editors expanded the number of covered authors but they have also included in the present work a table of contents, allowing users to find authors more quickly. Drawn from across the world, the field of authors ranges from critically regarded fiction writers like J. M. Coetzee and Gao Xingjian to writers in the fields of religion (Mircea Eliade) and political and cultural criticism (Frantz Fanon). The editors state that the majority of authors have lived in a culture "other than their own" either voluntarily or by force; a few are included who, though native, have been estranged by a differing dominant culture.

The introduction discusses literature development in various places in the world, including country-specific information in some instances, the effects of postcolonial multiculturalism on literature in general, and particular themes associated with these changes in literature--exile, escape, and distance (not only geographical). Individual entries begin with a short biography, followed by multicultural themes and then a survey of criticism. Entries end with bibliographies of selected primary and secondary sources. Articles average about five pages. The volume ends with a selected bibliography; an index of authors, works, and topics; and information about the editors and contributors.

ALBA AMOIA is Associate Professor Emerita of Romance Languages at Hunter College of the City University of New York and previously taught at Columbia University. She also held positions at the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the State Department Language Division. She is coeditor of Multicultural Writers from Antiquity to 1945 (Greenwood, 2002).

BETTINA L. KNAPP is Professor Emerita of French and Comparative Literature at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is the author of more than 50 books and is coeditor of Multicultural Writers from Antiquity to 1945 (Greenwood, 2002).
