I loved this book. I was so stuck on what to do for my HS research project, and then i read this book, and i was flooded with ideas. And suddenly i had all these ideas to pick and choose from, and has saved me A LOT of frustration since then. If i could give this book 6 stars, i would. It's absolutely perfect for any student to read through. Get it!

O'Dell begins with a short history of gender equality and then discusses the development of a collection with an emphasis on nonsexist literature (both fiction and nonfiction) and periodicals. Programming ideas, while relatively easy to plan, especially with the aid of volunteers, are exclusive to girls. Ideas for outreach and recruiting volunteers are mentioned. While some of these ideas are not necessarily gender specific, all of the resources in the bibliographies and Webliographies are. Filling a unique niche in reference collections, these two- to three-page biographical sketches are arranged alphabetically and cover 167 Caribbeans from all walks of life, including politicians, artists, scientists, and athletes. Every entry includes references and suggested readings, and appendixes cross-reference the entries according to profession and island of origin. Entrants include Harry Belafonte, Fidel Castro, Hector Hyppolite, and V. S. Naipaul. The editors sought a balance between historical (Jose Marti, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean Rhys) and contemporary (Jamaica Kincaid, Geraldo Rivera, Sammy Sosa) figures.

Some prominent Caribbeans, such as Faustin Soulouque and Francois Duvalier, were not included. As stated in the introduction, the volume presents individuals "who have distinguished themselves" and "enriched their islands." The intention may have been to include only those who made a positive contribution, but this does not make for a definitive reference tool. Also excluded are people about whom information is readily available, for example, Colin Powell. However, the biographies that are included are useful, and this volume will be a good addition to high-school, public, and undergraduate reference collections. RBB

SERAFÍN MÉNDEZ-MÉNDEZ is Associate Professor of Communication at Central Connecticut State University. A native of Puerto Rico, he is the co-author of Puerto Rico Past and Present: An Encyclopedia (Greenwood 1998).

DAVID W. MUSIC is Professor of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth. He is the author or co-author of several books in the field of hymnology, including Hymnology: A Collection of Source Readings (1996) and the fourth edition of A Survey of Christian Hymnody (1999) with William J. Reynolds and Milburn Price. He also served as editor of The Hymn (the journal of the Hymn Society in the U.S. and Canada) from 1991-1996.

LAURA COONER LAMBDIN teaches Professional Communications in the University of South Moore School of Business. She has published on Malory, Chaucer, and various Victorian poets, in such journals as Philological Quarterly and Arthurian Interpretations. With Robert T. Lambdin, she has coauthored Camelot in the Nineteenth Century (1999) and coedited Chaucer's Pilgrims (1996) and the Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature (2000), all available from Greenwood Press.

ROBERT THOMAS LAMBDIN is Assistant Professor of English in the College Applied Professions at the University of South Carolina. With Laura C. An introductory chapter traces Arthurian legend from its inception. The chapters that follow are each devoted to a particular author's use of Arthurian material in an exploration of love and death. For Tennyson, love leads to trust, and when trust is shattered, death soon follows. Arnold, on the other hand, advocates moderation, so that the loss of a loved one produces neither debilitating agony nor only a mild melancholy. Morris concentrates on the differences between physical and spiritual love, while Swinburne presents a world tormented by love and in which death is the only release.

About the Author

LAURA COONER LAMBDIN teaches Professional Communications in the University of South Carolina's Moore School of Business. She has published on Malory, Chaucer, and various Victorian poets in such journals as Philological Quarterly and Arthurian Interpretations. With Robert T. Lambdin, she has edited Chaucer's Pilgrims: An Historical Guide to the Pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales (1996), and the Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature (2000), both available from Greenwood Press.

ROBERT THOMAS LAMBDIN is Assistant Professor of English in the Transitional Year in the College of Applied Sciences Program at the University of South Carolina. He has published several articles on medieval literature and is the coeditor of Chaucer's Pilgrims: An Historical Guide to the Pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales (1996), and the Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature (2000), both available from Greenwood Press.
