What about natives?

Jamaica and Caribbean were the first natives before black slaves were overran them. The indians were gone long time ago. This book does not mention first natives. That is not right.

J.E. KAUFMANN is a retired public school teacher and has written several books on fortifications.He is founder of SITE O, an international research group consisting of enthusiasts and experts in the field of fortifications.

CLAYTON DONNELL recently retired from the U.S. Air Force. He spent several years in Europe doing field research on the Maginot Line and other French fortification systems. In 1996 he created one of the first internet sites in the world devoted to the Maginot line. He is an avid military historian and is especially versed in the period of the European conflicts from 1870 to 1945.

Atkins does not include acts of foreign terrorists, thereby excluding the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. His definition of extremism is "the advocacy of extreme positions by movements, groups, and organizations" and includes political, religious, economic, and social extremes; three-quarters of the entries focus on the years since 1980. Included are radical groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, PETA, and the American Indian Movement; key figures including David Koresh and Timothy McVeigh; and events such as the Waco Siege and the Ruby Ridge Incident. The many cross-references allow researchers to trace numerous facets of each subject. As one of the few in-depth sources available on this topic, this work will be an oft-consulted addition to reference collections.

An academic librarian has brought together information on a wide range of political, religious, economic, and social extremism in the U.S. over the past half century, with particular emphasis on the last two decades. According to the introduction, an extremist movement, group, or individual is one who pursues "policies or practices outside the societal norm," often through violence. The extremist agenda transcends personal gain and seeks to change the status quo. Although the focus of the book is on current American-developed extremism, links to Canadian and European movements are noted as well as roots earlier in the century. Foreign terrorists operating in the U.S. are excluded.

The 275 entries, varying from 200 to 1,500 words, cover leaders, ideas, organizations, and tactics. The largest category of groups and individuals advocates a transformation of the government. These include the Aryan Nations, Kathy Boudin, Ted Kaczynski, and the Michigan Militia. The second largest is religious extremism, followed by economic and social extremism practiced by Earth First! and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, among others. Reflecting the time period that is covered, most of the movements have a radical right orientation. The criminal and violent activities of the groups, the internal conflicts, and the shifting of allegiances between organizations and individuals are described. Birth and death dates, family background, motivation, education, and occupation of the individuals are provided when known. Several entries, such as Animal rights movement and Anti-abortion movement, provide a broad perspective. A list of suggested readings for each entry, current through 2001, directs the user to further information. Cross-references and black-and-white photos enhance the work, which concludes with a 13-page chronology of events and a selected bibliography (including some Internet sources).

While other books, such as Encyclopedia of White Power (AltaMira, 2000), cover specific aspects of extremism, this work offers a more comprehensive survey. It will be useful in high-school, public, and academic libraries. RBB

Libertarian Party included.

The Libertarian Party was included in this encyclopedia. I checked it out at a public library. Now, while it qualifies under the Author's contention that extremist parties are 'deviations from the normal' (my paraphrase), it shows the uselessness of such a definition of extremism.

The Libertarian Party has never advocated the overthrow of the constitution, any state constitution, or any armed paramilitary activities. At most Libertarians may use their constitutional right to arm themselves, but it is on an individual basis without ANY organization by the party.

The inclusion of the Libertarian Party makes the whole work suspect.

Grade 9 Up–The best feature of this volume is the full-color, cover photograph of schoolgirls in their red blazers and hats (their countries sadly unidentified). The chapters inside, contributed by different authors, describe teen life in 15 countries deemed most representative of the area and interesting to young people. Coverage extends from India to Japan; there are no entries for Burma, Laos, or Malaysia. In formulaic fashion, each chapter has an introduction, followed by material on a teen's typical day, family life, foods, schooling, social life, recreation, entertainment, and religious and cultural practices. The writing is uneven–at best, merely dull, but often repetitive, confusing, and irrelevant. Indonesia is cited as a tourist destination, particularly for young Australians, with no mention of the terrorist attack in Bali on October 12, 2002, and its subsequent impact on the tourist trade, especially from Australia. It is incorrect to speak of God (capitalized) in reference to Japan's animistic Shinto religion, and the Vietnam introduction confuses French Indochina and Indonesia. The resource lists after each chapter feature mainly adult works. The dense format is relieved only by a single black-and-white photograph in each chapter. There are no maps. GUILLERMO I. CASTILLO-FELIÚ is Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina. Totally misleading

The same text describes 3 of Minahan's books I own, as the text describing these nations given as examples is a copy-paste with very minor differences in all the books: Nations without States: A Historical Dictionary of Contemporary National Movements, One Europe, Many Nations: A Historical Dictionary of European National Groups and Encyclopedia of the Stateless Nations: Ethnic and National Groups Around the World. Guess I have not made much bigger stupidities in my life than to ordering all of these books at the same time.

Unfortunately, this book is a disaster. It is full of mistakes, especially about the given number of peoples, but it has historical or linguistic mistakes as well. For example, I'll give just a few data about Livonians:

Population: Minahan (M.) gives 100 000 (!), while the actual number is only a few hundreds at present. Though, historically Livonians once inhabited most part of today's Latvian coastline, the assimilation took part mostly centuries ago, so that people do not identify themselves as Livonians.

Historical Livonian province was only in its southwestern part ethnically Livonian, and the data M. gives about the Livonians in Estonia, is totaaly mistaken. The so-called Livonian cultural center of Massiaru town in Estonia has nothing to do with Livonians, and, after all, is only a smaal village.

While Livonians are a really tiny nation, the number is incorrect about some not so small nations as well, including in cases when the census data is available even by Internet. Some examples:

Ingrians: by M. 90 000 in Russia, 20 000 in Estonia and 250 000 in Finland. Actually, the total number was 67 813 at 1989 in Soviet Union, and all the Ingrians in Finland migrated there after the S.U. collapsed.

Karels: by M. 26% of the people of Karelian Republic in Russia, actually about 10%.

Mordvins: 1,848 millions by M., actually less than 1,1 millions.

And, one example from central Europe - Sorbs: by M. 543 000, including 40 000 in Poland; actually, about 60 000, as well as all in Germany.

So, after the data what can easily be controlled, how can you trust the data what is harder to check?

As a conclusion - I cannot find any more misleading so-called scientific book.

Toczek provides the first description of the entire battle of Ap Bac and places it in the larger context of the Vietnam War. Ironically, Ap Bac's great importance lies in American policymakers' perception of the battle as unimportant; for all their intelligence and drive, senior American government officials missed the early warning signs of a flawed policy in Southeast Asia by ignoring the lessons of the defeat of the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) on 2 January 1963.

The outcome of Ap Bac was a direct reflection of how the U.S. Army organized, equipped, and trained the ARVN. With all the ARVN officer corps's shortcomings, the South Vietnamese Army could not successfully conduct an American combined arms operations against a smaller, less well-equipped enemy. American leadership, both military and civilian, failed to draw any connection between ARVN's dismal performance and American policies toward South Vietnam. Although certain tactical changes resulted from the battle, the larger issue of American policy remained unchanged, including the structure of the advisory system.

About the Author

DAVID M. TOCZEK is a serving US Army lieutenant colonel currently assigned to a NATO post in Heidelberg, Germany. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, he received his Master's in history from Texas Tech University and spent three years as a military history instructor and assistant professor in the Department of History, United States Military Academy, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Well written,clear,just excellent.

Toczek, who is now a Lt. Col., wrote this fine book as a project back in 2001 when, I assume, he was at command school at Ft. Levenworth. Ap Bac was never delved too deeply in to until Sheehan's treatment in " A Bright Shinning Lie." Toczek takes it to a better level and leaves the reader with a much clearer picture of what went wrong with a sound battle plan. The battle failed on important levels. South Vietnamese resentment of American advice and support, fear of sucess and failure as a part of the Diem regime, lack of treatment for wounds inflicted during fighting, all contibuted to the culture that created a weak ARVN. Of course they cowered behind the dikes all day long.....wouldn't you if your own govt. refused you treatment for wounds incured? Officers above the NCO level were afaid to fail, of course, but were even more reluctant to succeed, as they could be perceived as a threat to Diem and removed from their post.

On the tactical level, Toczek explains the fight clearly from conception to finish. He is, as a writer, a bit dry like David Glantz...but that is a complement. Toczek's most astute observation, however, is of the South Vietnamese psyche which subtly effected the troops throught the war and ultimately led to their downfall.

Contrary to the negative review on this product, it's actually very well written and cited. Informative and well thought out, it is definitely worth a read for any one looking for info on the early Vietnam War.

About the Author

Thomas J. Davis, Ph.D., J.D., teaches history and law at Arizona State University, Tempe. He is the author of A Rumor of Revolt: The Great Negro Plot in Colonial New York, which the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights in North America prized as one of the outstanding books of 1985 on race relations. He is also author of numerous articles on race and law and co-author of Africans in the Americas: A History of the Black Diaspora.

It covers all kinds of racial interactions from the early days of the Republic to modern times, pairing historical events with the evolution of ideas, trends, and treaties alike.
