Out of Context: American Artists AbroadFrom Praeger

Regardless of their expatriate residence, 19th- and 20th-century American artists have viewed their destinies as linked inextricably to that of the United States. Antithetical to progressive democratic ideals has been the embedded class structure found by expatriate artists in European and Latin American communities, and as such, new interpretive approaches to public and private issues such as society reform and racial and ethnic equality provided the crucible for many American artists. In this way, American expatriate artists have been cultural arbiters between various histories and legacies within and outside the United States. This collection of essays by noted art history scholars explores the experiences and legacies of these artists, offering a depiction of their art as being informed both by native traditions and American individualism. Though often a subject of literary studies, expatriatism has too long been overlooked in the visual arts; this excellent volume serves both as a corrective and as a much-needed addition to current scholarship.

We see these combinations, these paradoxes, in Mary Cassatt's Spanish figures; in the Impressionist ties of the American colonies at Grez near the Barbizon forest; in Savage's allegorical subjects; in Francis's painterly allusions; in Sargent's guarded approaches to his foreign subjects; in Klumpke's feminism; in Whistler's innovations. Arguably, expatriate artists have delighted in an explicit marginality-one that, in turn, creates an inchoate definition of American art. Though often a subject of literary studies, expatriatism has too long been overlooked in the visual arts; this excellent volume serves both as a corrective and as a much-needed addition to current scholarship.

Presidents from Washington through Monroe, 1789-1825: Debating the Issues in Pro and Con Primary Documents (The President's Position: Debat

This work offers the best of both worlds: broad analysis of the first five presidential administrations and specific excerpts from original documents supporting and opposing the presidents' positions. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe speak for themselves as they argue for their positions on the key political, social, and economic issues of their time in excerpts from primary sources. Excerpts from opposing positions on each issue give the presidents' critics a voice. An explanatory overview of each issue will help students to understand the argument and the context of the issue and to apply critical thinking skills to their understanding. The section on each president includes entries on 4-5 key issues of his administration, from the president's title at the beginning of Washington's administration to American Indian removal at the close of Monroe's term.

Primary documents include presidential memoirs, speeches, and letters, congressional speeches, Supreme Court decisions, newspaper editorials, and comments from prominent private citizens. An introductory overview of each president's administration provides a useful window through which to assess the specific debates and documents addressed. A timeline provides a chronological backdrop for the subject, and recommended readings following each section offer helpful direction for further study. Though the founding presidents remain revered today for their pioneering accomplishments in the early nation, this work reminds readers that the first executives faced ongoing opposition from members of the legislature, judiciary, and general public. Readers will gain a grounded understanding of the contested issues of the young nation and the way early decisions impacted our political system across time.

The Dress of Women: A Critical Introduction to the Symbolism and Sociology of Clothing, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Originally serialized in 1915 in The Forerunner, and never before published in book form, The Dress of Women presents Gilman's feminist sociological analysis of clothing in modern society. Gilman explores the social and functional basis for clothing, excavates the symbolic role of women's clothing in patriarchal societies, and, among other things, explicates the aesthetic and economic principles of socially responsible clothing design. The introduction, by Hill and Deegan, situates The Dress of Women within Gilman's intellectual work as a sociologist, and relates her sociological ideas to the themes she developed in some of her other works.

Although written in 1915, Gilman's treatment of clothing and dress remains relevant. This pioneering effort adds substantially to Gilman's reputation as a sociological theorist and feminist. In addition, it represents one of the earliest full-length specifically sociological analyses of clothing and the fashion industry. Ultimately, the author concludes that harmful and degrading aspects of women's dress are amenable to reform if men and women will work together rationally to change the controlling institutional patterns of the society in which they live. This groundbreaking work will appeal to those interested in Gilman, feminist theory, sociological theory, social psychology, women's literature, and women's studies.

Contemporary African American Novelists: A Bio-Bibliographical Critical SourcebookFrom Greenwood

During the last two decades, African American writers have emerged as a distinct and dominant force in world literature. This force has been gathering momentum since the 1950s, when James Baldwin published some of his most compelling works and Ralph Ellison stunned the literary establishment with his dazzling Invisible Man (1952). Empowered by the Civil Rights Movement and revitalized by the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s, this force became more potent and pervasive. The publication of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye in 1970 was a major event in the literary history of the United States. With a voice as original as America itself, she began to conquer the English language and redefine the international literary landscape. Along with Morrison, scores of African American writers have mapped bold new territories and firmly entrenched themselves in the forefront of contemporary American literature. This reference book is a guide to the lives, works, and achievements of 79 contemporary African American novelists.

Through alphabetically arranged entries written by expert contributors, this volume offers lively, concise, and current information about these writers. Each entry begins with a biographical sketch of the author, provides a judicious critical assessment of the author's major works and themes, gives a representative sample of the critical responses the author's novels have elicited, and concludes with a selected bibliography that lists the author's publications as well as useful secondary material. Included are major figures, such as Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, James Baldwin, and Ralph Ellison. There are also entries for many noteworthy but lesser known figures, such as Tina McElroy Ansa, Bebe Moore Campbell, Randall Kenan, Reginald McKnight, Marita Golden, and Arthur Flowers. Some are popular writers with mass appeal, such as Terri McMillan and Frank Yerby; others, such as Octavia E. Butler, are known for their science fiction. Still others are distinguished poets or playwrights who have also published one or more significant novels. Of the 79 novelists profiled, 41 are women, and roughly a dozen have identified themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Thus the volume demonstrates the enormous diversity of these writers and the breadth of their contribution to world literature.

From Library Journal
This volume provides biographical, critical, and bibliographical material on 79 black writers (41 of them women), ranging from such luminaries as Alice Walker to lesser-known artists like Philip Lewis. In collecting pieces on a spectrum of novelists, this book could serve a useful purpose, but it is marred by several flaws. First, there are some notable omissions, including Amiri Baraka and Rosa Guy. More importantly, some of the entries are of uneven quality. The book would have benefited from more rigorous editing to update information, check facts, correct inconsistencies in style, and tighten the writing. It is most valuable for the pieces on several recent and/or overlooked writers who have not yet received the critical attention they deserve (e.g., Melvin Dixon, Marita Golden). For other authors, readers will be better served by African American Writers (LJ 6/1/91) or the volumes on black writers in the Dictionary of Literary Biography.Louis J. Parascandola, Long Island Univ., Brooklyn, NY

From Booklist
The past 20-odd years have seen the emergence of a significant body of African American fiction. Providing reliable, thorough, and up-to-date biographical, critical, and bibliographic information about that literature for advanced scholars, undergraduates, and general readers is the stated goal of this work.

The 79 profiled writers include major novelists, such as Toni Morrison and John Edgar Wideman, as well as such lesser-known writers as Steven Corbin and Dawn Turner Trice. The word contemporary in the title is somewhat elastic. Although most of the writers featured have written in the past thirty years, several had their most prolific period in the 1940s and 1950s. And although each author has written at least one novel, some of them are better known for their poetry, plays, or nonfiction. Forty-one of the writers are women.

Entries range from 4 to 19 pages, with most encompassing 5 pages. Each author's profile begins with a short biography. A discussion of the writer's major works and themes follows, with an overview of the critical reception in both popular and scholarly journals. Each entry concludes with a bibliography that lists the works of the profiled author and secondary sources for further investigation. The bibliographies are not completely up-to-date. Although novels published as recently as 1998 are included in several entries, others, such as Bebe Moore Campbell's Singing in the Comeback Choir and Gloria Naylor's Men of Brewster Place, are not, perhaps because they were published too late in the year. The bibliography for Alice Walker ends unaccountably in 1992.

The stated purpose of this book is to be a "scholarly guide to the lives, works, and achievements" of the writers profiled. Some of the entries accomplish this, with thorough, perceptive analysis, although others are cursory, providing little insight into the subject covered. The benefit of a compendium such as this is that a number of authors are covered in one handy volume, and some may be hard to find elsewhere. For more prominent writers, both general readers and scholarly researchers will be better served by other resources, such as Gale's Contemporary Authors.

Understanding The Merchant of Venice: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press

The Merchant of Venice, even in its own time, was considered Shakespeare's most controversial play. Now, one of the most popularly read and performed works, the play raises even more important issues for our day, particularly anti-Semitism and the treatment of Jews. Shakespeare scholar Jay Halio brings together his fascinating literary insights and his considerable knowledge of Shakespeare's world to this student casebook. His analysis of the play helps students interpret Shakespeare's plot and interwoven subplots, the sources that helped shape the play and the characters, and the thematic issues relating to justice, mercy, and the myriad bonds of human relationships. These themes serve as starting points for a broader understanding of the issues discussed and documented: Elizabethan marriage and women's matrimonial rights; Renaissance concepts of male friendship; legal, moral, and religious views of usury; and the treatment of Jews in Venice and beyond. The concerns raised by the play are put into context with historical materials including Sir Francis Bacon's essay Of Friendship, excerpts from Henry Smith's 1591 A Preparative to Marriage, extracts from Phillip Stubbes' 1583 Anatomy of Abuses, and Travel Accounts by Fynes Moryson that describe Venice and how Jews lived there in the early 1600s. This casebook also considers contemporary applications, with essays and editorials on current hate groups in the United States, the treatment of women, and male bonding. This section, culminating with a poignant interview in which actor Hal Halbrook discusses his stage portrayal of Shylock, will leave readers with an appreciation for how profoundly relevant The Merchant of Venice remains for our time.

This casebook introduces students to the many issues in the play with a Literary and Dramatic Analysis chapter. Six topic chapters examine the play in its historical context, combining expert discussion and primary documents, making this ideal for interdisciplinary study. Each topic section contains ideas for classroom discussions, research papers, and further suggested readings to help students get the most out of their study of The Merchant of Venice.

An excellent contribution
By Erin Kissane
For those with an interest in early imperial China, this is an exceptional resource. It's quite readable and detailed enough to provide a solid background for narrower studies or to provide Tang-specific information to a Chinese history generalist. For those with more academic needs, I would still recommend it, but would note that Benn has chosen readability over extreme granularity of detail -- e.g., we read about "a son of the emperor," rather than learning the prince's name in Chinese characters and in English.

One of the best books I've read on ancient China
By Eddie Nessuno
Having a Chinese wife and a deep respect for Chinese culture, I find this book invaluable in understanding China's past. Read it. It is so important to know more about the country that will, within the lifetime of many of us, overtake the USA as the number one global power. In a well-written and widely researched book, Charles Benn has achieved the impossible... brought to life for a modern Westerner a strangely alien world from which the China we know (or think we know) has emerged. Follow this book with 'When China Rules the World' by Martin Jacques (Penguin Books) and you'll be getting somewhere!
