About the Author

MARY JANE LUPTON is professor of English at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. A founder of Women: A Journal of Liberation, she was one of the co-editors of this Baltimore-based magazine from 1970 to 1984. The author of numerous articles on African American literature, she is co-author, with Emily Toth and Janice Delaney, of The Curse: A Cultural History of Menstruation (1976 and 1989). She is also author of a ground-breaking book, Menstruation and Psychoanalysis (1993).

In many instances, whites figure prominently in these works, frequently portrayed as oppressors. Through a careful examination of works by black writers, Davis constructs a typology of white images in the African American imagination. The book argues that these images repeatedly occur in works by black writers. Some of these stereotypes include the overt bigot, the hypocrite, the liberal, and the good-hearted weakling.

While black writers are often explicit in representing the racism of the overt bigot, Davis notes that African American literary works are much more complex in their exposition of the hidden forms of bigotry manifested by covert white racists. The volume suggests that black authors believe that racism is not merely a form of thought or behavior, but a manifestation of identity. While Davis gives detailed attention to the works of Charles Chesnutt, James Baldwin, and Richard Wright, she also looks at several other black writers and examines discussions of whites in contemporary critiques of race by such authors as Derrick Bell and Ellis Cose.

About the Author

CARY GINELL, a music historian and radio broadcaster, is the owner of Sound Thinking Music Research, where he works as a music consultant for the entertainment industry. He is also the co-owner of the Origin Jazz Library record label, and has conducted oral histories with many seminal musicians in country music and jazz. He is the author of The Decca Hillbilly Discography, 1927-1945 (Greenwood, 1989) and Milton Brown and the Founding of Western Swing (1994).

KEVIN COFFEY is a researcher and historian whose work concentrates on American music in the southwest, with a particular emphasis on western swing. His work has appeared in The Journal of Country Music, and he is a contributing author to The Encyclopedia of Country Music.

Essential discography

An excellent discography that fills a gap in music research. These bands represent the ground between country music and swing and are direct forerunners of rock and roll. While most hot string bands are here, it would have been nice to see Leo Soileau's various groups and the Alley Boys of Abbeville included. But maybe that indicates just how rich this field is. Great job.

How does your library media program measure up?

This is an excellent resource for library media specialists, building and district-wide administrators. For veteran library media specialists, the book provides information on current practices and evaluation methods. Library media specilaists entering the field will find a wealth of information on programs that are successful as well as the methods necessary to implement programs and policies in their own facilities. Building and district administrtors can use this volume as a guidebook when developng and/or rejuvenating library media programs. The book is particularly strong on the issue of staff development. The anecdotal examples are from all kinds of library media programs across the country. There is an excellent index. The bibliography is current and provides many useful resources that can be consulted when developing a comprehensive program. If you are adding one book to your professional collection this year, Curriculum Partner should be the one.

Melvin B. Tolson (1898-1966) was both a participant in and historian of the Harlem Renaissance, probably the most significant movement in African American literature and culture. Known mostly for his poetry, and an unduly neglected figure in American literary history, Tolson was one of the first African American critics of the Harlem Renaissance. This book is an edition of his 1940 MA thesis, the first academic study of the Harlem Renaissance written by an African American scholar. Tolson's thesis, previously unpublished in its entirety, provides a unique look at this important era and draws heavily on his familiarity with some of the most important writers of the movement.

Included are discussions of such major figures as Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and W.E.B. Du Bois, along with chapters on lesser-known authors such as George Schuyler, Eric Walrond, and Jessie Fauset, who are now being rediscovered. An introductory essay surveys the history of Harlem Renaissance criticism and Tolson's place in it and evaluates his methodology and use of sources. The introduction additionally presents a brief biography and details the creation of his thesis. The text of Tolson's thesis appears in its entirety, along with his notes and those of the volume editor. The book closes with a bibliography of works on Tolson and a large but selective bibliography on the Harlem Renaissance in general.

About the Author

MELVIN B. TOLSON (1898-1966), born in Moberly, Missouri, was an important yet often undervalued African American poet, journalist, and dramatist whose fame rests largely on four books of poetry: Rendezvous with America (1944), Libretto for the Republic of Liberia (1953), A Gallery of Harlem Portraits (1979), and Harlem Gallery: Book I, The Curator (1965). He also published a newspaper column, Caviar and Cabbage, which appeared in the Washington Tribune from October 9, 1937 to June 24, 1944. He was named Poet Laureate of Liberia in 1947. In 1966 he received the National Institute and American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature.

EDWARD J. MULLEN is Professor of Spanish at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he has taught since 1971. He has been the coeditor of the Afro-Hispanic Review and has published numerous articles on Spanish American and African American literature. His previous books include Afro-Cuban Literature: Critical Junctures (Greenwood, 1998).

A heaven-sent book for scholarly research on collaboration.

Peck and his colleagues do a fantastic job of collecting annotations on collaborative writing articles dating from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s. Not only are the articles sorted according to whether they concern academic or workplace writing, but they are also subcategorized into useful headings like theoretical support for collaboration, problems with collaboration, preparing students for collaboration, etc. The annotations are much more substantial than you'll find in the CCCC Bibs, and most of them give me a good idea whether or not the article or book in question will be helpful to my research. I've been working on a dissertation in collaborative writing for the past two years, and have often felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of literature on the subject; I have two file cabinets full of articles and a shelf full of books, and it's tough to keep track of it all. I wish I had this book back when I started the project! Although I winced a little at the hefty hardcover price, in the three days I've owned this book it's already saved me hours of time. I recommend it heartily to all compositionists who want a concise and nearly-comprehensive reference for collaborative writing research over the past 25 years.

Edward Taylor (1642-1729) was one of the most influential ministers in Puritan New England. He was also a prolific but unpublished poet. With the discovery of his poetry in 1936 and the publication of a nearly complete volume in 1960, his reputation as the premiere early American poet has grown immensely. His widely anthologized work is taught in most introductory American literature courses and nearly all courses on early American literature. This reference is a convenient guide to his poetry, including a summarization of the current state of scholarship on his work.

Beginning with an overview of his life and times, this reference analyzes Taylor's Preparatory Meditations and Gods Determinations, along with his other poems, in light of Puritan doctrine and his thoughts about poetry. The book traces the genesis of his works, their editorial and publication history, and the complex cultural and historical background of his writings. Later chapters discuss his themes, his poetic art, and the reception of his works. A brief bibliographical essay completes the volume.

ROSEMARY FITHIAN GURUSWAMY is Professor and Chair of English at Radford University. The founding vice president of the Society of Early Americanists, she researches and writes about early Puritan and African American authors. Her essays have appeared in such journals as Early American Literature and New England Quarterly.
