African/Diaspora women's symbols of power assert their autonomous definitions of good and evil, enabled by decolonialist analysis as expounded by theorists such as Chinweizu, Jemie, and Madubuike to be separated from universalizing, Eurocentric or masculinist assessments. Symbols of inherent, rootedness and empowerment are clearly identified, allowing the reader to perceive tales of salvation and success underlying and further developing literal tales of suffering, surrender, or loss. Erik M. Jensen is the David L. Brennan Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University, where he has been teaching for over 20 years. He has also taught at the Cornell Law School. Formerly a practicing tax lawyer, Jensen has written widely on tax issues in academic law reviews and other journals. In recent years, he has focused his work on constitutional issues affecting taxation.

Within the study of masculinity, the early modern period stands between the Renaissance, when conceptions of manhood were primarily dominated by chivalric and humanistic traditions, and the latter half of the 18th century, which marked the beginnings of modern conceptions of masculine identity. But rather than a transitional period, the early modern era was a key moment in the evolutionary dynamics of masculine representation. Political forces, such as the Puritan revolution, the Restoration, and the shift in power from the courtier class to the growing middle class forced a reconsideration of the masculine ideal in light of the experiences of the masses. At the same time, the emergence of print culture provided a means of transmitting the new masculine ideal, and literature of the period reflected the changing notions of masculinity.

The chapters in this volume explore the various strategies used by early modern writers to represent masculinity. Together, the expert contributors offer a broad perspective on the social and political dynamics of early modern masculine identity. Included are chapters on such writers as Thomas Carew, Andrew Marvell, Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, John Dryden, Daniel Defoe, and Samuel Richardson. Though incorporating a variety of critical approaches, the contributors all explore the inherent anxiety associated with masculinity and its representation. The chapters demonstrate how significant literary texts of the period provided not only idealized images of early modern manhood but also contesting ones. By focusing on the literary, historical, and social dynamics which construct cultural perceptions of masculinity, this volume ultimately illustrates the literary representation of manhood in the early modern period to be a dynamic and evolving process which often challenged Western notions of what it means to be a man.

About the Author

DAVID CHIDESTER is Professor of Comparative Religion and Director of the Institute for Comparative Religion in Southern Africa at the University of Cape Town. His recent books include Savage Systems: Colonialism and Comparative Religion in Southern Africa (1996), Religions of South Africa (1992), and Shots in the Streets: Violence and Religion in South Africa (1991).

CHIREVO KWENDA is Lecturer in Religious Studies and Associate Director of the Institute for Comparative Religion in Southern Africa at the University of Cape Town. His disseration (1993) was entitled True Colors: A Critical Assessment of Victor Turner's Study of Ndembu Religion. He is coauthor of African Religion and Culture Alive (forthcoming, 1997).

ROBERT PETTY is Research Associate at the Institute for Comparative Religion in Southern Africa at the University of Cape Town. His disseration was on the fragments of Numenius.

JUDY TOBLER is Research Manager for the Institute for Comparative Religion in Southern Africa at the University of Cape Town. She completed her doctoral research in Religious Studies in 1997 with the disseration, Gendered Signs of the Sacred: Contested Images of Mother in Feminism, Psychoanalysis, and Hindu Myth, at the University of Cape Town.

DARREL WRATTEN is Lecturer in Religious Studies and Associate Director of the Institute for Comparative Religion in Southern Africa at the University of Cape Town. His dissertation (1995) was entitled Buddhism in South Africa: From Textual Imagination to Contextual Innovation.

These writings also betray a bias against women that has not been regarded, until now, as a key issue in the literature discussing Orientalism. Missionaries often actively fostered the British colonial agenda, while women travelers, even those who traveled as a means of escaping patriarchal structures at home, invariably abetted the colonizer. Despite the optimism placed in the post of post-colonialism, Murti concludes that the continued presence of European Orientalism can be felt in the late 20th century, hidden under the mantel of global capitalism.

As an American Germanist of Indian heritage, who received her education in India and Germany, Murti brings about a fundamental change in the questions about Germany and India. For students and scholars of the colonialism and postcolonialism, her engagement with Edward Said andhis ardent critic Aijaz Ahmad provides and opportunity to escape a simplistic understanding and application of Orientalism .
