SUSAN C. W. ABBOTSON has taught English for over fifteen years, both at the high school and university levels. She currently teaches at the English Department of Rhode Island College. She is coauthor of Understanding Death of a Salesman (Greenwood 1999). Librarians adding video to their collections, particularly if they are doing so reluctantly, need to read this book. In this second edition of his 1994 original, editor Handman has compiled a comprehensive collection of experience and insight from more than two dozen librarians on policies, issues, and resources necessary to build useful video collections in school, public, academic, and special libraries. Since much has changed in the intervening years, this update is very welcome. With copyright law and policies in a state of flux, Handman's article "The Rights Stuff: Video Copyright and Collection Development" is particularly relevant. Chapters on video services for users with special needs and on cultural diversity are also well done. Each chapter has a list of materials to assist librarians with the "nuts and bolts" of collecting videos for a particular clientele or purpose. The chapters in the "Resources" section, which cover video reference tools and selection aids, sources for finding alternative media and stock and archival footage, and video and film organizations and discussion lists, contain particularly useful bibliographies. Even experienced media and collection development librarians will find new and helpful information and resources here. This is an essential purchase for all public and academic libraries.

This work covers fundamentals of traditional Native American economies throughout North America (considered to be Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and Guatemala); changes in economies brought about by European contact; current economies on reservations and controversies surrounding them (e.g., debates on gambling); and environmental issues as they impact Native American economic systems. Approximately 150 unattributed, alphabetically ordered articles written by subject area experts, most of whom hold college or university posts in Native American studies, political science, or history, present these topics at lengths varying from a single sentence to 14 pages for Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) economy, with most being one or two pages. Written in a clear, crisp style, articles are slightly dry, but certainly informative, and are current for events through the mid-1990s.

Examples of entries include Cahokia, Cheyenne economy, corn, fishing rights, James Bay hydroelectric project, termination policy (1950s), and trade. Articles dealing with the exploitation of the environment are included because "the Native American point of view often considers environmental and economic themes as part of the same process." The apparent goal of creating an in-depth consideration of Native American economies as a field is more or less achieved. Aimed at college and university audiences, the information is also accessible to high-school students. All the articles are followed by short bibliographies of works related to the topic. An up-to-date bibliography and an index are located at the volume's end. The index is not always complete. The single index citation for Tenochtitlan leads to the article slavery and Native Americans, but Tenochtitlan appears elsewhere in the volume, especially in the article Aztec economy.

Though much of the cultural information given here can also be found in such works as The Encyclopedia of North American Indians [RBB D 15 96], the focus on economics gives this a unique place on the shelf. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

BRUCE E. JOHANSEN is Robert T. Reilly Professor of Communication and Native American Studies at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. His academic specialty is the influence of Native American political systems on U.S. political and legal institutions. His best-known books in this area are Forgotten Founders (1982) and Exemplar of Liberty (1991). His most recent books include Native American Political Systems and the Evolution of Democracy: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood, 1996) and The Encyclopedia of Native American Legal Tradition (Greenwood, 1998).
