England's capture of Canada in 1760 was the culmination of the French and Indian War and of a century and a half of conflict between Britain and France for control of the North American continent. During that long period, there were several English military efforts to evict the French, but all failed. Therefore, at the war's start, few among the English entertained serious thoughts of totally evicting France from all of Canada. Nor did the French consider such a result a serious possibility. Drawing heavily on primary sources, Brecher tells the dramatic story of why the war's outcome differed so sharply from original expectations. He does so from the vantage point of France, while demonstrating in greater depth than has been available to date the linkages between France's American policy and involvement in the Seven Years' War.

Brecher provides an unprecedently full-scale analysis of the political, military, social, and economic conditions of mid-18th-century France and its North American colony, New France. That analysis also examines the direct connection between those internal conditions and the results for France of the war that ended in 1763. In doing so, Brecher assesses France's military strategy and major battles in Europe and America, as well as the diplomatic goals Versailles set for itself in the conduct of the war. Further, he describes why France concurred in leaving not only Canada, but also the vast Louisiana territory, to be divided between England and France's belated wartime ally, Bourbon Spain. Finally, Brecher explains the longer-term implications of the war for North American development and for the future of France. This is an important study for students and scholars of French and colonial American history and for the broad reading public, as well as those interested in the more recent Quebec problem.

About the Author

FRANK W. BRECHER is a former career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service. He holds degrees from CCNY and Columbia University, and was a Fellow at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Among his earlier publications is Reluctant Ally: U.S. Foreign Policy Toward the Jews from Wilson to Roosevelt (Greenwood Press, 1991). Mr. Brecher is preparing a sequel to the present study, assessing France's early relations with the United States up to the Louisiana Purchase.

This much-needed, thorough guide should be a welcome addition for those librarians who have struggled for years to find positive, compassionate books to give support to les-bian and gay youth and children of lesbian/gay parents. Following a poignant foreword by Nancy Garden and the evalua-tion guidelines used for this bibliography, Day provides detailed, critical annotations for more than 275 recommended books, arranged in six categories: picture books, fiction, short stories, nonfiction, biography/autobiography, and adult/professional re-sources. The last chapter contains 16 profiles (with black-and-white photos) of authors who have made significant contributions to this field of literature. Two appendixes list a calendar of lesbian/gay events and resources, including hot lines, publications, and organizations; and title, author, and topic indexes are provided. There is one minor flaw: some sloppy editing has missed a few typos and at least one error in the Nancy Garden annotations, in which the infamous book burning is referred to as being in Kansas City, MO, in one place and in Kansas City, KS, in another. Still, this is an extraordinary compilation that belongs in every collection.

This is a welcome resource for teachers, parents, school administrators, and librarians who are seeking to provide sensitive and realistic portrayals of homosexuality to young people. Day, a retired grade-school teacher who has written several other books on multicultural literature and serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults, has selected and annotated some 275 recommended books that feature both major and minor lesbian and gay characters. Thankfully, many of the titles remain in print, while others are cited because they are classics. Readers may be familiar with the controversial title Daddy's Roommate , but Day shows that there are many more titles with lesbian and gay themes.The entries are divided into six categories: "Picture Books," "Fiction," "Short Stories," "Nonfiction," "Biography and Autobiography," and "Books for Adults," listing titles for librarians, educators, and parents. Each entry offers bibliographic information, an age recommendation, and a relatively detailed annotation. There are also profiles of 16 authors from various ethnic and career backgrounds. Among them are noted children's and young adult literature expert Michael Cart and M. E. Kerr, author of the award-winning Night Kites . Profiles are accompanied by black-and-white photos, critiques of the authors' work as it relates to gay and lesbian themes, and short bibliographies of works for adults as well as for young people. Completing this worthy volume is a calendar of significant days; a list of hot lines, publications, videos, and organizations; and a general bibliography, all important in supporting the needs of gay youth. Title, author, and topic indexes are included. Day also provides a checklist for evaluating books with lesbian and gay content. Although the emphasis is on literature for children and young adults, Lesbian and Gay Voices provides information for readers of all ages. I did not know that you could do that!

Everything that you ever wanted to know about daily life and then some. The book does not have much depth on any one subject but must more with of subjects than a book ten times its size.

If you are only going to read one book on Egypt this is it. If you have several shelves this book has a fresh approach to many subjects. For example I have several books on Egyptian mathematic from layman to temple. This is the first time I saw the fraction system relating to different parts of the Eye of Horus.

The notes, biography and index are also quite short. No color.

The Realities of Daily Life

Even if you do not have much of an interest in Ancient Egypt this book is filled with information and explanations that will make you wonder why you haven't given much thought to the Ancient Egyptians before. The art, literature (first love poems!!), and architecture are enough to make you marvel. But the creation of a 365 day calander a by the ancient Egyptians a few thousand years ago is enough to give you pause; then you discover how really remarkable their skill and knowledge of medicine was and you sit back in awe, at least I did. Though there are illustrations, I wish there were more. And for some reason (though this may be unique to my eyes) the font that the Greenwood Press uses in this book, seems to require more focused reading. But these are very small concerns regarding a book that really gives you more than just information. It gives you a sense of the whole culture, and, if you're like me, you'll want to find out even more, which is a clear sign that the authors have done an excellent job.

As an adjunct to Bob Brier's lectures on The Great Courses, this is fine...

My understanding is this is simply an adjunct to the Bob Brier series on The Great Courses - something that I'd heartily recommend.
This text, alone is not much (in fact it's not something I bothered finishing), together with the course mentioned above however, it's outstanding. If you buy the book, you really need to buy the course - I'm already thinking of restarting the entire lecture series, it's that good.

About the Author

Jerry W. Ward, Jr. is Professor of English and African American Studies at Dillard University and was previously the Lawrence Durgin Professor of Literature at Tougaloo College. His previous books include Redefining American Literary History (1990), Black Southern Voices (1992), and Trouble the Water: 250 Years of African-American Poetry (1997). His work has also appeared in such journals as Southern Quarterly, Obsidian, and Callaloo.

Robert J. Butler is Professor of English at Canisius College. His books include The Critical Response to Ralph Ellison (Greenwood, 1998), The Critical Response to Richard Wright (Greenwood, 1995), The City in African American Literature (1995), and Richard Wright's Native Son: The Emergence of a New Black Hero (1991). His articles have been published in The Centennial Review, The Dreiser Newsletter, CLA Journal, MELUS, and other journals.

This book is a joke

This book displays a truly colossal ignorance of its subject. That might sound unfairly negative, but put the book to the test. Just open to any given page and you will see error after error. Ok, I've just done that myself to demonstrate: I've opened the book to the page on tanks in this theater. What did I find? The description of the Pershing and Sherman tanks available to the UN forces (US troops). What does it say? That the Sherman was the more effective of the two tanks! Read on ... we soon discover that APC ammo for tank guns is short for "Armored Personnel Carrier!"

Obviously a hack job. There's a growing list of books on the Korean War available -- no need to buy one that obviously doesn't have the first clue of the basics for this theater.

DAVID L. PORTER is Louis Tuttle Shangle Professor of History at William Penn College. In addition to being editor of Greenwood's multivolume Biographical Dictionary of American Sports, he is editor of African-American Sports Greats (Greenwood, 1995) and an associate editor of American National Biography.
