The entries are arranged alphabetically by author's last name, except for tribal or ethnic names where the significant part of the name is first. The list of subjects ranges from Bess Streeter Aldrich (1881-1954) through Zitkala-sa. With the exception of Eudora Welty, all are deceased.The information is arranged in four sections: "Biography," "Major Works and Themes," "Critical Reception," and "Bibliography." Articles are written by academic specialists and vary in length from four pages to ten for Kay Boyle, Willa Cather, H. D., Nella Larsen, and Gertude Stein. The biographical information is brief and includes the most basic details, while the overview of the major works and themes is quite substantive and will be very useful for research. "Critical Reception" considers reactions both at the time of publication and today. Reference aids such as a selected bibliography of general works on women writers, an index, and information concerning the contributors are included.Though there are many other resources available on American women writers, this book will be a valuable tool for research because it balances coverage of the prominent and the lesser known. Several women who flourished during their lifetimes but have now fallen into obscurity are profiled, as are a number who have been largely ignored. An introductory chapter presents the criteria used for inclusion of the case studies. Organized alphabetically by country or geographic area, the entries include a time line of significant events in the region, followed by a general discussion of the area. The volume opens with five regional maps with legends that indicate the geographic location of each of the case studies. The volume is sparsely illustrated, with most of the essays including a small, black-and-white photograph. The typeface is large, giving the pages a clean and readable appearance. Students will find this volume to be a useful tool in understanding the history and causes behind some of the major events in today's world.

The articles are substantial, covering the historical background of the conflict's characteristics, management, and significance and including a chronology, cross-references, and a bibliography. Examples include "Central Europe: The Romany, a Stateless Minority in a World of States"; "United Kingdom: Scotland and Scottish Nationalism"; and "Western Sahara: Ethnic Conflict and the Twentieth Century's Last Colonial War." Arrangement is alphabetical based on country or geographic area. An appendix lists the volume's contents by region, and an extensive index gives good access.

Averaging about 10 pages in length, the articles provide excellent, in-depth treatment of each conflict. The limited number of articles means that the coverage is highly selective, but the editor did a good job of choosing conflicts that are prominent in the news and likely to be of interest to library patrons. Capturing the interest of readers and advertisers, these journals published reliable service departments, fiction, and investigative reporting; however, competition eventually bred editorial caution. This, coupled with the depression of the 1930s, led to a narrowing of content and the beginning of Betty Friedan's feminine mystique. After World War II, the journals faced competition from television. The women's liberation movement and women's entry into the work force also brought changes.

This work is wonderful. It started as a dissertation and grew into a great source book and a wonderful history of Popular Women's Magazines in the U.S. I found it engaging and useful. Ms Zuckerman has made her research into a really good read. This book examines the start of trends in the US publishing business that have continued to this day. The role of woman as consumer was crafted early on in the 20th century and has changed the role of women in our society dramatically.

Dostoevsky more feminist than Charlotte Bronte?

This is an engaging book at a number of levels. Grenier takes the ward figure (dependent, marginal and female) and discovers a fascinating "plot" in the various uses of this figure in Russian literature, starting with Pushkin's "Queen of Spades." Pushkin's text generates a whole series of responses by later authors, who respond to him and to each other by endowing this character with a greater or lesser degree of subjectivity. Grenier asks: does the author treat the ward as an object to be manipulated in order to prove some ideological point, to serve as background or victim to the main event? Or does the author treat her as a subject, allowing her to have a voice in her own fate, a voice equal to the author's own? One of Grenier's most interesting discoveries is the extent to which Russian literature is embedded in intertextuality. Tolstoy learns from Dostoevsky and Anna Karenina is more polyphonic than War and Peace. Dostoevsky reads a (bad) translation of Jane Eyre and transforms and recombines themes and actual speeches and distributes them amongst a number of characters in Demons (The Possessed), whereas in Bronte's book only Jane, not Blanche or Bertha, has a voice. But the book is not just literary criticism of a very high order. Lots of books use Bakhtin, and by this time one may nod one's head knowingly whenever someone says "dialogue" or "polyphony" or "carnival" or "unfinalizability." Grenier takes Bakhtin back to his roots in Russian philosophy, and here is where the "personalism" of the subtitle comes in. The human being, any human being, even the most grotesque, is a subject in a world of subjects. What we think and say to ourselves and others is saturated in what those others think and say. And yet my voice is my own. The person is "unfinalizable" not in the postmodern sense that I am an amorphous blob that takes on any shape that society or language or I myself, at various times, impose on it. I am unfinalizable because no one else can say a final word about me, no one can usurp my voice and put me in the third person--"oh, she's a ward/a woman/a murderer/a fool, and therefore..." Grenier liberates Bakhtin from the straitjacket he seems to have fallen into lately--as does Olga Meerson in her book on Dostoevsky's Taboos. Very highly recommended.
