In France the decade preceding the outbreak of the First World War was characterized by a revival of nationalism and militarism. Wesseling analyzes the ideas current in France in this period about the use, value, and beauty of war, the army, and army life. Attempts at reforms were most frequent in those areas where antimilitarist writers had concentrated their criticism. In conceptualizing war, as Wesseling shows, a distinction can be made between speculations on war as a concrete phenomenon and as an abstract notion. During the period, war was looked upon as a factor of renewal and regeneration. The years from 1905 to 1914 were of great importance for the history of the military problem in France. A new appreciation of the ideals that were preached in the army came into being. Though this did not lead to militarism in the sense that the military determined politics, as Wesseling illustrates, it did lead to a militarist attitude.

One of the best books on "Culture" and on "India" out there

I have been teaching Cross-cultural negotiation to law students for about five years and I have used and read dozens of books on Indian Culture. This book is throughly researched and very well written. I love the fact that the author looks deeper in to cultural norms and asks the question "why" instead of passing any assumptions. That's what I was looking for, being a teacher of "understanding" and I am happy that there are some authors that take the pain to do very well researched and very well thought scholarship! Highly recommended.

This is a excellent book and was very useful for my term paper. It has a lot of background info on tons of subjects. I found the "recommended reading" list very helpful. And this book is very interesting reading. It is witty and fun to read.

About the Author

GORDON L. ROTTMAN has served 26 years in the U.S. Army in Special Forces, airborne infantry, long-range reconnaissance patrol, and military intelligence assignments in the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve. He began writing military history books in 1984. He is employed by TRW System and Information Technology Group as a special operations forces scenario writer at the Army's Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Simply Excellent!

World War II Pacific Island Guide: A Geo-Military Study is a detailed survey of the Pacific islands which served as battlegrounds during the war. The author, Gordon L. Rottman, a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant and Vietnam veteran, served with elite units, such as the Airborne, Rangers, and Special Forces. Rottman is also the author of more than two dozen other books, including most recently: U.S. Marine Corps World War II Order of Battle: Ground and Air Units in the Pacific War, 1939-1945 (Greenwood Press, 2001) and Korean War Order of Battle: United States, United Nations, and Communist Ground, Naval, and Air Forces, 1950-1953 (Praeger Press, 2002).

The 477 pages of the World War II Pacific Island Guide are divided into three parts. In Part I, "Geo-Military Aspects of the Pacific Theater", Rottman briefly discusses the Pacific Ocean, physical categories of islands, health hazards, island populations and political dynamics, distances and dimensions, times and dates, military organization, and military ranks. In Part II, he provides a chronology of World War II in the Pacific. In Part III, which occupies the vast majority of the book, Rottman discusses (in detail) the islands themselves and the battles fought on or near them. This last portion of the book is itself divided into six sections - Central and Southern Pacific U.S. Possessions, South Pacific Area, Southwest Pacific Area, Central Pacific Area, Western Pacific, and North Pacific Area.

I can think of absolutely nothing that has been omitted from the World War II Pacific Island Guide and the only criticism that I can make regarding this superb volume is its prohibitive cost. I certainly do not blame the author and I realize that this is a specialty book, but $104.95 is an utterly ridiculous price. Unfortunately, the price will probably prevent many people from purchasing this volume, which is regrettable, because I believe that it should be on the shelf of anyone seriously interested in the Pacific Theater during World War II. I highly recommend this book and I am convinced that it will be a generation or two (if ever) before it is supplanted.

A comprehensive work flawed by myriad errors

As the previous reviewers have stated, this is a wide-ranging review of the geography of the Pacific Islands of importance during World War II. It is very impressive in its scope and level of detail. Sadly, it is flawed by being riddled with basic errors. A few examples: the book states that the battle of the Coral Sea occurred in March, 1942 (not a mere typo; the battle is placed _before_ the Doolittle Raid on a time line of the Pacific War). The book seems to randomly confuse east and west when stating directions: it states that Wake Island is _west_ of Tokyo and that Midway is _east northeast_ of Oahu, among many many examples of east and west being reversed. A final example: the text description and the map of Johnston Island disagree in scale by a large factor, so it is impossible to tell from the book what the dimensions of the island were at the time of the war. Finally, the book suffers by lacking reference notes for the facts stated in the text. It does include a "selected" bibliography, but without reference notes in the text, it is effectively impossible for the reader to trace the statements in the text back to their primary sources. I consider this a crippling shortcoming in what aspires to become a standard reference work.

I believe that this book has great potential as reference, and a later edition, thoroughly edited and revised, and with references included in the text, would be much closer to fulfilling that potential than the present version.

Essential reference work

These three volumes rank as an essential desk reference set right along with Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia. So much information on popular culture and background information on all kinds of things -- I am constantly going to my local university library to use it because I can't afford my own home copy. I wish I could!

Errata, page 385 and ...

On page 385 the author says "Minette: Recollections of a Part-Time Lady [is] the autobiography of Steve Watson, a drag queen popular in the 1950s and 1960s..." (See also the index, page 442.)

Two errors here, one egregious and one minor: the memoir is not Steven Watson's. Watson is the book's stated editor. And it is not an autobiography. It is the edited typescript of a series of 1979 interviews, conducted by Ray Dobbins, of the beloved female impersonator named -- surprise! -- "Minette." (Minette's surname at birth was also Minette.)

The author's nutty misidentification of the book's subject is hard to fathom. The book is very, very hard to find, and Slade probably never saw it, let alone read it; but I'm pretty sure general information about Minette would have been available online in 2001, when this "reference guide" was published. (I started reading about Minette later, around 2003, so I can't be sure about that.)

Anyone interested in Minette's vivid stories can now find the text of the 65-page book online, at the Queer Music Heritage website.

Their willingness to adhere to their beliefs brought them into conflict with ecclesiastical and civil authority. Often, these women sacrificed their lives; all of them refuted the stereotype of a passive female Church member. These women's stories unfold within the complex picture of medieval Europe, but their beliefs and struggles offer models of Christian living relevant to today.

This work will appeal to scholars of gender and women's studies, theology, and European history. The research and documentation provides information about these women previously available only in scattered and often obscure sources. Although these women represent a unique ecumenical mix of backgrounds, they share a common strength, commitment, and feminine approach to religion.

very interesting work but a wonderful author

Dr. Conn, a interesting and knowledgeable teacher , gives a wonderful work of the women who are often lost in the study of religion. She gives form, through her words, to women whose contributions often go unnoticed throughout the study of religon and history. She gives us their true stories, not just the myths that our society uses to define them.
