Encyclopedia of Literature and Science, by Pamela Gossin

Science and literature have always been strange bedfellows. Like puzzle pieces, they fit because they're different. Some of the greatest works of world literature have been inspired by the marvels of the scientific world. Scientists have written works of the imagination. Even formal scientific writings have been known to employ rhetoric. There is a tendency to think of literature―and the humanities in general―as having little to do with science. Yet scholars have conducted fruitful studies of the history and philosophy of science. With the rise of technology, scholars have also applied scientific analysis to the study of literature and the creative process. The intersection of scientific and humanistic inquiry is finally being mapped. This volume includes more than 650 A-Z entries on topics and themes in science and literature, significant writers, key scientists, seminal works, and important theories and methodologies.

This reference defines the rapidly emerging interdisciplinary field of literature and science. An introductory essay traces the history of the field, its growing reputation, and the current state of research. Broad in scope, the volume covers world literature from its beginnings to the present day and illuminates the role of science in literature and literary studies. A wide range of experts contributed entries to this volume, each of which concludes with a brief bibliography. The entire volume closes with a list of works for further reading.

From Booklist
As stated in the preface, the purpose of this book "is to introduce the emergent field of interdisciplinary literature and science (LS) studies to those just discovering it and provide a ready reference tool for those already working in a specific area." There are more than 650 alphabetically arranged entries, varying in length from 50 to 3,500 words and covering a wide range of topics: themes (Astronomy, Dystopias, Environment); writers (Asimov, Isaac; Milton, John); scientists (Feynman, Richard Philips; Kepler, Johannes); theories (Darwinism, Poststructuralism); and more. Among the longer entries (two to three pages) are Anthropology/psychology/sociology; Culture; History of science; and Literary representations of the scientist. Literary topics are discussed in terms of their relationship to science, and scientific topics in terms of their relationship to literature. Cross-references abound. Each entry is signed, and most have a brief bibliography. An extensive general bibliography includes works used to compose the entries and titles for further reading.

The intended audience is "undergraduate college and university students and their instructors," so although the volume is meant as an introduction, the language can be quite technical. Young adult authors such as Madeleine L'Engle and William Sleator have been excluded--perhaps they have not yet been absorbed into the LS field.

Literature and science traditionally come together in the science fiction genre, but this volume shows that the two disciplines merge in other, diverse ways. Most academic libraries will need a copy of this encyclopedia, and large public libraries should consider adding it to their collections. RBB

Understanding Jane Eyre: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press

Immediately popular when published over a century and a half ago, Jane Eyre has continued to find appreciative audiences since. This student casebook offers a unique interdisciplinary approach to the study of Charlotte Bronte's landmark novel. While it gives insightful literary analysis, it also contextualizes the novel in terms of the historical social issues it confronts. Expert commentary is supported with primary documents from legal and medical treatises, magazine articles, letters, essays and first hand accounts. A personal biography written by Elizabeth Gaskell, an acquaintance of Bronte, offers a detailed account of the Cowan Bridge School which Charlotte attended and fictionalized in Jane Eyre.

Educators will find ideas for teaching these topics and for helping students see the connections between the novel and the social concerns it raises. Devoted to close examination of such topics as the diagnosis and treatment of madness and inheritance and marriage law and custom, this work will help students to understand historical cultural influences of yesterday. Contemporary issues such as education and mental illness raised by Jane Eyre are also discussed. Each section offers valuable ideas for written and oral exploration including role playing, debates, and journal writing assignments. Chapters conclude with suggestions for further reading.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-This series entry provides some literary critique of Charlotte Bronti's classic work, but the majority of the book is devoted to excerpts from documents that place the novel in its historical context. These selections address topics relating to the position of women in Victorian England, the nature of female education, the social and professional status of the governess, the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, and the implications of marriage and property law. Teachman uses these issues to illuminate the situations and motivations of the main characters, including Jane, Mr. Rochester, and Bertha, the first wife locked in the attic. Most of the excerpts are brief and accessible but also relevant and interesting, making them ideal for reports. The excerpts on law can get bogged down in technical terms, but the other sections contain enough provocative material to compensate for this flaw. The final section is devoted to the ways these issues are being dealt with in the 21st century, which helps to make Jane Eyre timely and significant to contemporary students. This book should be especially popular among students interested in women's issues.

Review
"Understanding Jane Eyre requires understanding a woman striving to write in a world where women were not allowed to enter the medical profession, where husbands controlled their wives money and communication. This volume not only analyzes the writing of Charlotte Bronte, but discusses life in Victorian England--the education of girls, the role of the governess, the treatment of women diagnosed as insane, inheritance of marriage laws--and compares it with the 21st century. This book will be useful to social studies, English and women's studies classes."-Gale reference for Students

Misunderstanding "Jane Eyre"
By California Freethinker
This book has some valuable background documents on topics that form the story of this great classic novel: marriage law, the Victorian governess, insanity, and women's rights. Reading these excerpts may help high school students understand a novel which is set almost 200 years ago in a world of unimaginable darkness and cruelty. On the other hand, there are two flaws which mitigate against this being a good choice for any high school library. First, the style is amateurish and hackneyed. The author often uses the same word twice in a sentence. I would not want my students learning this rhetoric of literary criticism. Second, there are many factual errors. In the "Literary Analysis" chapter. Richard Mason is called Bertha's stepbrother. This is his relationship in "Wide Sargasso Sea." We know from the marriage certificate read by solicitor Briggs in Hay Church that Richard is her brother and Jonas Mason is their father. Blanche Ingram is characterized as an "heiress" with a large dowry. In the book the Ingrams have little money even though Blanche's brother is Lord Ingram. In her evaluation of the characters of Jane and Edward, Ms. Teachman opines that if they had kept their feelings under control, Jane would not have run off into the night at risk of life and limb. Spoken like a true Victorian! In discussing women's education, Ms. Teachman describes Lowood as a school for the daughters of poor clergymen. She is at pains to tell her readers that it is not a charitable institution. In this, she confuses Cowan Bridge School for Clergy Daughters, which the four oldest Bronte sisters attended, with its representation in the novel as that most infamous of charity schools, Lowood Institution.

Review
"An account of what chemistry is and what chemists do as opposed to a text of how to do chemistry, this engaging introduction to the field is at its best when speaking historically….Myers does a good job in providing an appropriate, introductory level of detail, choosing to err on the side of clear, general descriptions as opposed to subtle, difficult reasoning….for the beginner, the book will provide insight and motivation for further study. A broad but superficial overview, badly edited
By Alan Meyer
I am a non-chemist, non-scientist who will never be a professional chemist or scientist, and was looking for a good introduction to chemistry aimed at people like me.

I was attracted to this book for two reasons. First of all, it was a non-mathematical treatment. That seemed desirable because I wanted to learn the concepts and not spend hours drilling on equations that I would never use. I have done some reading in a couple of superb college level texts (Pauling's classic text and a more recent one by Oxtoby et. al.) and was hoping to learn the basics without mastering all the rigorous detail in those books. Secondly, the author takes a historical approach to the subject, giving the reader some feel for the progress of the science and not just presenting it as received wisdom with no insight into where that wisdom came from.

Although the book has good points and the author clearly knows his subject, my hopes were disappointed. The lack of mathematical rigor is carried too far. Complex subjects that cry out for deeper explanation are treated very superficially. The historical perspective is not carried far enough. We learn something of the history of chemistry but do not get much information about the crucial experiments and observations that led to each ground breaking insight.

To some extent, this is unavoidable. Chemistry is not an easy subject. If a chemist sets out to provide an easy introduction in a relatively small number of pages (for a chemistry textbook that is), he's got to make major simplifications and compromises. To his credit, Myers really tries to convey some sophisticated information in simple, easy to absorb lessons. I think he might have done better, but he might have done worse.

On the other hand, Greenwood Press has done an atrocious job of preparing the book for publication. There seems to have been no editing at all. Zero. On almost every page one can find a place where a sentence contains a wrong word, a diagram is mislabeled, or an awkward, jarring phrase has been allowed to stand. The illustrations are mostly either out of copyright black and white images of historical scenes, or simple tables, formulas or diagrams that look like they were prepared by the author. It looks as if Myers did the entire job himself in Microsoft Word or some other word processor, gave it to Greenwood, and they published it without reading it or providing any real help. Perhaps they paid for an indexer to prepare the index at the back, or perhaps Myers had to do that too. I don't expect a good chemist to be a great writer or editor, but I do expect a publisher to smooth out the rough spots.

Given the low production quality, I can't understand why this book costs $86.95. It's not worth it. Barron's _Chemistry the Easy Way_ for $16.99 is probably about equally good (and bad), and provides more value for the money.

While society may applaud middle and upper class women who decide to stay home to raise their children, there exists a decided abhorrence for single mothers, welfare queens, who collect public funds but do not work. Here, Hart challenges traditional notions of welfare mothers by providing first-hand accounts of poor urban mothers and revealing the life-affirming and moral aspects of their motherwork--a form of subsistence work, involving many tasks that incorporate the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of life. Though the mothering work these women do is vilified in public discourse as unnecessary and unwanted, the author contends that the ethical and epistemological dimensions of life-affirming work--a key component of motherwork--not only structure social-political activism but also educational efforts that are oriented towards radical change. Concrete experiences of motherwork, policy analyses regarding welfare reform, efforts oriented towards educational and epistemological border-crossings, and collective struggles for social change are examined here in a larger theoretical, political-economic framework.

Pulling together the many strands of different theoretical fields addressing issues related to critical/transformative pedagogy, community activism, and forms of unpaid work, this unique work calls for the unlearning of ways of thinking and feeling which uphold prejudices and life-threatening social-political hierarchies. While the public may sneer at women who choose to accept welfare in order to stay home to raise their children, these mothers must continue to perform this invisible work in order that their children may break the cycle of poverty in which they are entrenched. The author examines ways in which these mothers organize and carry out educational efforts and political work in the context of extreme poverty and against the harsh criticisms of an unforgiving public. Ultimately, Hart hopes to convince the public of the inherent importance of motherwork and break down the prejudices that have worked against the urban poor and single mothers.

An Ambrose Bierce Companion:, by Robert L. Gale

Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842 and mysteriously disappeared in 1914. During his lifetime, he was a controversial and prolific writer, and there is growing interest in his works. As a Union soldier during the Civil War, he witnessed bloodshed and the atrocities of battle. After the war, he began a career as a journalist in San Francisco, where many of his newspaper columns were filled with venom and daring. In addition, he wrote war stories and tales of the supernatural, along with an assortment of poems. Today, he is probably best remembered as the author of The Devil's Dictionary, originally published as The Cynic's Dictionary in 1906. This reference is a guide to his life and writings.

An opening essay overviews Bierce's contribution to literature and journalism, and a chronology summarizes the most important events in his life. The bulk of the Companion comprises alphabetically arranged entries on Bierce's major works and characters and on historical persons and writers who figured prominently in his life and career. Thus the volume provides coverage of Bierce's contemporaries, many of whom he satirized in his scathing newspaper columns. Many of the entries list works for further reading, and the book closes with a selected, general bibliography. Because of Bierce's concern with so many issues of his day, the volume offers a valuable perspective on American culture during the time in which he lived.

From Library Journal
Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914) is one of America's best satirists, though his Juvenalian bent leaves him much less popular than figures like Mark Twain or Ring Lardner. Gale (emeritus, English, Univ. of Pittsburgh) believes that Bierce is not just one of our best writers but that he is a "towering figure" whose importance has yet to be fully appreciated. Here he covers "90 percent of Bierce's really valuable publications" (short stories, poems, essays, etc.) as well as the people in his life. There is some commentary and interpretation (such as a defense against the charge that Bierce was anti-Semitic), but most of these alphabetical entries are simply summaries of the plots of stories and poems and themes of essays. Many entries include short bibliographies, and there is also a general bibliography, a chronology of Bierce's life, and an interesting preface. Deeper critical analysis would have improved this compilation, but libraries with good American literature collections should definitely purchase it, despite its high price. Peter Dollard, Alma Coll. An underwhelming effort
By T. Kelly
I was deeply disappointed by this book. The entries on individual stories don't provide basic bibliographical information about first publication or subsequent appearances. Entries consist of facile plot summaries with next to nothing by way of critical insight or biographical context. I'm astounded such a feeble work was even published. The work of S. T. Joshi on Bierce is far more substantial on both bibliographical and biographical issues. The only use for such a book as this is if you can't remember in which story a particular character appears.

Monsters, Mushroom Clouds, and the Cold War: American Science Fiction and the Roots of Postmodernism, 1946-1964 (Bibliographies and Indexes

The 1950s are widely regarded as the golden age of American science fiction. This book surveys a wide range of major science fiction novels and films from the long 1950s--the period from 1946 to 1964--when the tensions of the Cold War were at their peak. The American science fiction novels and films of this period clearly reflect Cold War anxieties and tensions through their focus on such themes as alien invasion and nuclear holocaust. In this sense, they resemble the observations of social and cultural critics during the same period.

Meanwhile, American science fiction of the long 1950s also engages its historical and political contexts through an interrogation of phenomena, such as alienation and routinization, that can be seen as consequences of the development of American capitalism during this period. This economic trend is part of the rise of the global phenomenon that Marxist theorists have called late capitalism. Thus, American science fiction during this period reflects the rise of late capitalism and participates in the beginnings of postmodernism, described by Frederic Jameson as the cultural logic of late capitalism.

"[a]n impressive, enjoyable book, and one that makes valuable contributions to the history of American science fiction and to our understanding of the culture of the American 1950s. We should be grateful not only to Booker but also--and yet again!--to the much under-appreciated publishers of the Greenwood Press, whose long-time support of sf criticism is as admirable as it is generally unsung."-Science Fiction Studies

"The bibliographies of books and films are especially valuable....Highly recommended as a provocative examination of the interplay between creativity and cultural pressures, this title will stimulate other such discussions. All collections."-Choice

Science fiction and the culture of the 1950s
By K. Bunker
"Postmodernism" is one of those terms whose definition is so vague and convoluted that it's debatable if it should ever be used as part of a book title (except for books like Postmodernism For Beginners).

And in fact, I've seen this book listed under a title that omits that word: "Monsters, Mushroom Clouds, and the Cold War: American Science Fiction in Novel and Film, 1946-1964." Ah, much better, eh? You now have some idea of what the book is about. OTOH, with that more down-to-earth title, the book sounds somewhat less worthy of its vertical-market price of a bazillion dollars. (.8 bazillion for the Kindle edition.)

If you happen to have a spare bazillion dollars, or access to a library that carries this book, it's well worth the read. In friendly and engaging prose, Booker examines the interactions between science fiction and the political/cultural atmosphere of what he calls "the long 1950s" -- 1946-1964. This time period was characterized by some predominant themes: fear of nuclear war, anti-communist hysteria and the reactions against this hysteria, stultifying conformity and the reactions against this conformity, the arrival of the space age.

Looking at both SF novels and SF movies (often two barely-related genres, as Booker acknowledges), Booker discusses how these and related aspects of 1950s culture influenced science fiction, and how science fiction often expressed both the highest hopes and darkest fears of this fascinating period of American history.

I particularly enjoyed his thoughts on the politics -- sometimes explicit, sometimes inferable -- of SF writers of the fifties, considered on a left-wing/right-wing spectrum. Even readers who consider themselves familiar with Robert Heinlein's work and politics will likely be brought up short by the rabid right-wing extremism in the passages from Heinlein's 1950s novels that Booker quotes.

Also very interesting was Booker's discussion of 1950s SF films, which he argues were -- in general -- less awful and simplistic than they're generally remembered and characterized as being nowadays.

Overall, this examination of the political and cultural themes found in the science fiction of the "long fifties," both generally and in its detailed discussions of many individual SF novels and films, is an informative, insightful, and entertaining read. This book deserves a wider audience than it's ever likely to get with its current bazillion-dollar price.

Religious and Political Ethics in Africa: A Moral Inquiry (Contributions in Afro-American & African Studies), by Harvey J. Sindima

This volume investigates the causes of the political, economic, and moral problems of today's Africa and provides a framework for the reconstruction of modern African states. The author focuses on the interaction between religion and politics throughout history and on the role of the Church in postcolonial Africa. In order to develop a basis for African political and religious ethics, he uses an interdisciplinary approach that draws from political theory, history, and social and religious ethics. Among the issues discussed are ethnicity, mismanagement, corruption, and the African concept of power.

Victorian London's Middle-Class Housewife: What She Did All Day (Contributions in Women's Studies), by Yaffa C. Draznin

Through a detailed description of the life and activities of the middle-class married woman of London between 1875 and 1900, this study reveals how housewives unwittingly became engines for change as the new century neared. In marked contrast to the stereotypical depictions of Victorian women in literature and on television, Draznin reveals a woman seldom seen: the stay-at-home housewife whose activities were not much different than those of her counterparts today. By exploring her daily activities, how she cleaned her home, disciplined her children, managed her servants, stretched a limited budget, and began to indulge herself, one discovers the human dimension of women who lived more than a century ago. While most studies of this period consider values, aspirations, and attitudes, this book concentrates on actions, what these women did all day, to provide readers with a new perspective on Victorian life.

Late-Victorian London was a surprisingly modern city with a public face of well-lit streets, an excellent underground railway system, and extended municipal services. In the home, gas stoves were replacing coal ranges and household appliances were becoming more common. Having both money to spend and a strong incentive to buy the new laborsaving devices, ready-to-wear clothing, and other manufactured products, the middle-class matron's resistance to change gave way to a rising consumer culture. Despite her nearly exclusive preoccupation with home and family, these urban women became agents for the modernization of Britain.

Review
"While researching pioneering nineteenth-century feminists, Yaffa Claire Draznin realized that she was in fact more interested in the unobtrusive lives' of surburban London housewives. In Victorian London's Middle-Class Housewife: What She Did All Day, she seeks to re-create the fabric of these lives--what schooling they had, what their husbands did, what size their houses were, and what kind of clutter those houses contained (stuffed birds, wax flowers, and photograph albums were favorites). Draznin finds that housewives served as financial managers of the household and employers of servants, which gave them significant social clout. As a result, their tastes and priorities--they were keen on labor-saving devices and luxury items--helped shape consumerism as we know it today."-The New Yorker

An understudied and interesting world
By Eileen G.
In this detailed and wonderfully informative book Yaffa Draznin has reconstructed not only a day in the life, but most of the days in the lives of her historically overlooked subjects. In the course of her research on this book she found that the housewives she had become so curious to learn more about had "left no records at all." Contemporary Victorian literature, Draznin posits, could not be relied upon to provide the hard data she sought. She combined information culled from contemporary magazines, "domestic manuals," and the history of commerce with her knowledge of Victoriana and her "deep familiarity with housewifery" to create her models.
Draznin's readable, jargon-free, and to-the-point chapters are each able to stand alone. "Greater London in 1875: A Resident's View," provides a portrait of London that is deep and thorough. You can smell it and hear it: prodigious amounts of manure on the streets, "the deafening noise of traffic," and the astonishingly poor air quality that motivated urban dwellers to support the establishment of suburban towns. Many moved out of the city.
Family health, contraception, the bearing, rearing and education of children, the managing of servants (protocols were carefully spelled out and, it was assumed, observed), choosing where to live, decorating the home, buying, using, and maintaining the considerable gadgetry (especially the sewing machine) of modern life all were the housewife's concern. In addition there were spiritual and moral issues that she was expected to manage. Volunteering one's time for helping or nurturing activities was higly socially acceptable, and widely practiced. In addition there are budgets and ledger entries, menus for meals plus teas, and black-and-white illustrations.
"The Matron as Her Own Person: Satisfying Personal Needs within and Outside the Home," details the considerable industry that grew to serve the needs of the housewife in possession of more free time than ever. Magazines, lending libraries located in bookstores, (for there were few public libraries, and of them, few were "free" ), visiting, sewing, card-playing, and socializing filled what free time she had. Draznin's high praise, though, is reserved for an activity that was "restful and pleasant," one that middle-class housewives "engaged in with lady friends in quiet and elegant surroundings that offered many amenities." Draznin asks rhetorically, "What did she do?" and then answers, "She went shopping." This reliance on stores combined with the troublesome (to the consumer) quirks of British shopping -- no prices marked on goods, no advertising, snobbishness, and little price competition -- eventually engendered considerable changes in consuming throughout Britain.
This is a delightful, accessible, and well-researched book that will interest students of Victoriana, urban history, and women's history. Young readers will be pleased, too. There is a lengthy bibliography and a good index. Completely worthwhile.

Victorian housewives -- drudges, angels, mothers and -- shoppers?
By Rebecca Huston
I've always been interested in the history of the home, and especially that of ordinary people. One period that has the most documentation available is that of the Victorian era -- the nineteenth century in Europe and America -- when a rising affluence and increased technology combined to create a booming middle class. And the person who decided just how that new middle class home looked and was used was not necessarily the man of the family, but rather his wife.

Yaffa Claire Draznin explores this rather unusual world in her book, London's Middle-Class Housewife: What She Did All Day, and provides a good leaping off point for starting to research this topic. Divided up into three parts, the book looks into the background of the Middle Class Housewife, life in London and its suburbs and how the MCMW (Draznin's abbrieviation for the Housewife) interacted with it, and finally, the end of the Victorian period, and how the MCMW was an instrument in that change.

Part I: The MCMW's Background, 1850-1875
The MCMW (Middle Class Married Woman) -- just who was she? She was probably the child of a shopkeeper, or bureaucrat, poorly educated by modern standards, and expected to defer to her parents and her husband when decisions were made. She was most likely to be homeschooled, and learned what she could of housekeeping from her mother, but by the time she was married, was expected to know enough mathematics to keep household accounts, be able to read and write, and know enough about cooking and sewing to provide meals and be able to do some basic sewing and mending. While heavier work would be shifted onto the shoulders (and back) of the one servant she was likely to have, the maid-of-all-work, she was expected to know enough to supervise and make sure that all was kept in order. Draznin also touches on what sort of man her husband would be, how many children they might have together, and about what the income would be, and finally, what the MCMW would look like and her clothing.

Part II: The Reality: Life in Greater London, 1875-1900
From what I could gather from this book, what seperated the MCMW from the working classes was that she had a servant to help, but that did not mean that she was completely free of drudgery either -- especially laundry. This was a complicated, labour intensive chore that tired me out just from reading about it. There was also cleaning, from sweeping and scrubbing that had to be done, to purchasing food, making meals, seeing that her children were fed, clothed, washed and schooled. One of the more interesting aspects of life in London was the mail service -- mail would be delivered up to twelve times a day, and was regarded as very effiecient. There were servants to manage -- from the maid, to perhaps a cook and nurserymaid, and all of these people had to be hired, and sometimes fired, or replaced when they quit. Money had to be looked after. But there were matters outside of the home as well -- her children's schooling, family holidays, social and religious obligations and finally, discussing personal needs. One of the big surprises that I found in this was the rise of the Shopper -- where shopping moved to being not just taking care of basic needs, but where the MCMW moved into the world of the consumer, and where shopping could be entertainment and a social activity with her friends.

Part III: The End of the Century: Conclusion
Intermingled with all of this was the relentless change that was moving the Victorian world towards the modern one that we know today. Increased need for skilled labour in the workplace was putting a squeeze on that eternal problem for the MCMW -- factory and office work was very tempting to the maid-of-all-work, and certainly less burdensome and more profitable. While the number of available servants were dwindling, more labour saving devices were appearing, saving some time. Too, as families aged, the MCMW and her spouse were having to make changes and adapt to one another, as they had hopefully, advanced in income and status.

Each chapter has extensive footnotes attached, and provide an excellent source for further research in each topic. There is also a very useful appendix that goes into understanding the British system of money at the time, explaining what the pound, shilling and pence were. Finishing up are a bibliography and Index.

I found this to be a fascinating read, and I was learning quite a bit about a time and place that keeps getting skipped over. The writing is crisp, and while each chapter is rather sparse in the details, it's still a good read.

My biggest disappointment in the book was the real lack of illustrations, I was hoping that there would be more to show the reader all of the various objects and perhaps even a floorplan of the typical home. Instead what I got was several photographs of buildings, and some drawings that were done by a modern artist. Pretty, but several of them are extremely clumsy, with skewed perspectives, and ultimately, not very useful.

Draznin's writing style is very readable, and a touch tongue-in-cheek in spots. While this is a small book, under 200 pages, it is a good starter for anyone interested in this topic, and especially in women's studies. What this book gave me in particular was the backbreaking amount of labour that went into keeping a home, and managing her family's care and wellbeing that the MCMW went through -- all the while trying to fit in with what was expected of her in the world around her. The fact that all of this was happening just over a century ago is what makes this so intriguing -- and we're still having to cope with the same unrealistic demands and expectations today.

For anyone who watched the PBS series _Manor House_ and _1900 House,_ this is a real eye-opener of a book. For further reading I would suggest Judith Flanders' Inside the Victorian Home and Kathryn Hughes' _The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs. Beeton_ -- which was also turned into a television programme, _The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton._

Four stars over all, and actually closer to five, but the lack of illustrations and some depth is what knocked this book down for me a bit. Recommended.

expensive disappointment. the entire book was conjecture about what the mchw might have done because there is no information and we are not sure. almost sixty dollars for the equivalent of an over referenced term paper that says nothing...just like high school. i wish i could get my money back.
