Superficial job of explaining how Spain and Portugal came to be such very different cultures and languages

Not Suited for Kindle

Somewhat outdated (says the unit of currency is escudo). But the text of this book relies heavily on descriptions of the geography, which is difficult to imagine without having a map in front of you. The time line which he uses to summarize the history uses inconsistent fonts (some entries are large and readable) but then there are others that are too tiny to read unless you make the standard font size huge. Since this is rather pricey for a Kindle book, I really recommend just getting the hardcover version so that you can see maps, photos, and more!

A Good Basic History of a Culturally and Historically Comple

Anderson ofers the reader a well thought out and researched basic history of Portugal. If you want to get a quick feel and appreciation for the country ,this is a good book to pick up. There are a few errors in the spelling of Portuguese words and some historical innacuracies. These, however, are minimal.
Anderson, despite his substantial knowledge and experience in Portugal, also seems to have a less than complete appreciation for the ethnic composition of the Portuguese people. Most of the Northern and Central parts of the country are a Celtic, Roman, Suevian and Visigothian mix. The far north is clearly more Celtic in ethnicity than other regions. The people of the southern areas are essentially a blend of Roman, Arabic, Greek, Northwest Saharan and a minor amount of Vandal and other Germanic blood. Anderson's reference to "African" slaves as being part of the Portuguese "stock" is rather stange. In fact, it is toally false in the context he seems to be using the term. Incorrect phrasing, or maybe incorrect sentence structure? Yes, Portugal did have a black slave (and some "Arab African" slaves as well) population from the mid 15th century but, these people were never absorbed into the population in any significant manner. They were used as servants and agricultural laborers ands were hardly treated as being part of Portuguese society at large. Slaves were found mainly in Lisbon, the Alentejo and the island of Madeira. The majority of black, and some Arab slaves, that entered Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries were actually transhipped to other European nations such as Spain, the Netherlands and parts of England. Liverpool and Manchester, England, for example, are well-known for having had important black slave societies that came from Portuguese ports in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Overall, the book is a well written and informative read.

Excellent companion for Garcia Marquez

The book allowed me to understand the complexity of the plot in One Hundred Years of Solitude. It also provided me with enough historical background information for understanding the short stories within the book. My favorite, however, was the chapter on Love in the Time of Cholera. I fully recommend this book for the reader of Garcia Marquez who lacks the background knowledge on Latin American issues.

He then looks at how friction over events in Cuba culminated in the Spanish-American War of 1898. Several decades of mutual disengagement followed until the two nations again clashed over the early pro-Axis sympathy of the Franco regime. The fear of Soviet aggression would finally unite the two in the post-World War II era with a bilateral agreement to establish military bases in Spain as part of strategic arrangements to defend Western Europe.

His selection of entries covers the Shakespearian (caviar to the general ), the biblical (land of milk and honey), the Aesopian (sour grapes ), and the more contemporary (slush fund), along with regionalized metaphors (lamb fries for fried lamb's testicles) and drug slang (such as nose candy and stoned out of your gourd). Food for Thought

As collector of dictionaries, and someone interested in histories of food I picked this book up, looked at the price and said, "How good is this?". At first glance it seemed general; the price more impressive, until I began to read each entry. I was swept up into the pages finding wonderful metaphors, quotes, proverbs, and idiomatic language. English slang of both the UK and USA. After reading it for 20 minutes I decided it was worth purchasing, much food for thought. Spices are thin hence my four stars instead of five. It is filled with interesting tidbits of history and is a wonderful resource.

Yummy reading!

Wonderful bite-sized entries of two kinds -- words and phrases that are about food, and words and phrases that use food as metaphor or turn of speech. It's fascinating and ties into multiple areas of interest for me -- culinary history and language history. I recommend this to anyone who is that sort of geek like I am. A friend of mine bought this and then I saw it on FB -- I'm so glad I did, because I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

Amazing and definitive

This is a fascinating, comprehesive study of END OF THE WORLD films ranging from comedies such as THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT to profound and dark films like NO BLADE OF GRASS and THE SAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE. Mitchell also makes a unique distinction between apocalyptic and postapocalyptic films. He examines a hundred examples of aocalyptic films and fifty of postapocalyptic as contrast. Fifty films are provided in depth coverage. My three favorites are the whimsical treatment of THE MAN WHO COULD WORK MIRACLES, the penetrating study of Abel Gance's truncated Thirties masterpiece, END OF THE WORLD, and DELUGE. My examples are all Thirties films, but all decades are included up to ARMAGEDDON and END OF DAYS. There are a number of interesting photos as well, including a mock newspaper headline from the rare Thirties film DELUGE, as well as a shot showing the Statue of Liberty getting swept away in a flood. This is a genuine first rate fimography. Recommended

Wells' THE MAN WHO COULD WORK MIRACLES, DELUGE, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH, CRACK IN THE WORLD, THE SATAN BUG, MARS ATTACKS, METEOR, THE SEVENTH SIGN and many more. The introduction divides apocalyptic films into eight categories and the author explains the differences between apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic genres. A spellbinding and essential film resource book.

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) played a seminal role in Post-Impressionist France. In his writings and work, he favored emotional responses to nature over intellectual uses of lines, color, and composition. In 1888 he and Emile Bernard developed a new style called Synthetism. Three groups of Gauguin's symbolist followers―Pont Aven, Les Nabis, and Rose + Croix pursued and extended the Synthetist vision. This sourcebook focuses on the most prominent adherents of the three schools directly affected by Gauguin's symbolism.

This is the first comprehensive, single-volume guide and bibliography of artists in these three important French avant-garde movements. This work covers the entire careers of 16 artists by providing biographical sketches, chronologies, citations to primary and secondary literature and exhibitions.

RUSSELL T. CLEMENT is the head of the Art collection at Northwestern University Library, Evanston, Illinois. His recent publications include The Women Impressionists co-authored with Annick Houze and Chritiane Erbolato-Ramsey (Greenwood, 2000)

ANNICK HOUZÉ is the French, Italian, and Art cataloguer at the Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Provo. She co-authored The Women Impressionists (Greenwood, 2000) with Russel Clement and Christiane Erbolato-Ramsey, and Neo-Impressionist Painters (Greenwood, 1999) with Russel Clement. She is a native of Dunkerque, France.

CHRISTIANE ERBOLATO-RAMSEY is the Fine Arts Librarian at Brigham Young University and holds an MLS and an MA in Art History. She has researched Latin American Women Artists and computer applications in the study of art history. She is a member of the Art Libraries Society of North America. She is also co-compiler of The Women Impressionists (Greenwood, 2000).
