Indispensable for Sinatraphiles

An amazing tome, and a necessary piece of the research 'puzzle' for any serious student of Sinatra. This is not a book for those interested in his private life (it is called a "private" life for a reason), his acting work, or his unreleased concert and radio/tv appearances, nor is it intended for the beginning listener/collector (you will get overwhelmed by the detail). But for those of us who simply can't learn enough, it is the best book out there - the textbook of the school of Sinatra - easier to use and far more accurate and complete than other similar works. It is the only book I have yet seen that sets out to list all musicians at each session whenever possible, based on original union contracts in order to ensure accuracy (record companies weren't in the habit of paying musicians who didn't play, so union payment documents are the best way to get a true feel for who is playing on what).
I have very few gripes, the only ones perhaps being the author's decision to exclude any false starts or breakdowns in his take-by-take discography, and a lack of any analysis of alternate mixes. A mix can make or break a song, and especially with Sinatra's work being comparatively poorly reproduced on many recent CDs (such as the Capitol era 'Entertainer Of The Century' "remasters"), it would be nice if mixes were dealt with in some detail and perhaps if the reader was pointed to 'best sources' or warned of what editions feature remixes or 'remastering' that alters the originally intended sound. These are comparatively small issues, though, and do not detract from the detailed nature of the scholarship that went into this gem.
The one most unfortunate thing about this book is that it is in desperate need of an update. It deals with releases through the end of 1999, so there is no mention of the myriad of material that has appeared in the dozen years since the book was published.
Nonetheless, it is a necessary addition to the bookshelves of a serious Sinatraphile, and something that you will find yourself going back to reference again and again. Expensive? Possibly. Indispensable? Definitely.

An Indispensable SINATRA Reference Tool!!

If you're really into Sinatra...and the truly great musicians that backed him up, then this is an absolute 'must have'!! I bought my copy in 2006 and it's my constant companion as I listen to all of the marvelous studio recordings by Mr. S. Written by Luiz Carlos do Nascimento Silva from Brazil and first published in 2000, this book covers everything...including actual recording dates, city locations, record company, approximate time spans when the recordings actually took place, session conductor/arranger, and my favorite part: all of the musician session personnel that took part in all of Sinatra's recordings for all of his studio recording dates. It lists names and instrument played!! The book begins with Chapter 1, titled 'The Band Vocalist,' covering Sinatra's early career from late 1939 to early September, 1942, when Frank left Tommy Dorsey's band to begin his solo career. From there...it's a continuing chronological trip with each chapter dedicated to each decade from the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. If you've ever wondered who played that awesome trombone solo, saxophone solo, piano solo, etc.,...it's all here!! Yes, it's a little expensive...but the information given here is very informative and enlightening--especially for us Sinatra 'addicts' that never seem to get enough of the man commonly referred to as 'the greatest interpreter of American popular song the world has ever seen.' Yeah, I'm one of those folks that believes that, too!! Get your copy soon...before this little gem goes out of print!!

Terrific work of scholarship

Terrific work of scholarship. However, my copy arrived with quite a few blank pages, a substantial printing/publishing error. When I inquired I was told that all copies have the same defect, so that they were unable to provide the missing pages.
