This is a good book if your looking for a basic review of ww2 transcriptions and how they were laid out in the catagories...But I was looking for more of a complete directory not explain the catagory then give me a sample of 5-10 or so records that would be in that title??? But I do understand threw reviewing information in book alot of the record #s matrixs and contents were lost due to poor managment of gov. property... So I guess if this is it ????

Haworth explores the origins, conduct, and outcome of the Bradley controversy, along with its implications for Army institutional cultures, force designs, and doctrines.

Challenging traditional partisan views of the Bradley program, Haworth goes to the roots of the issue. The author details the mechanized infantry's problematic status in the Army's traditional division of roles and missions between its Infantry and Armored branches. While new conditions demand new equipment, old institutions and current commitments inevitably complicate matters; thus, traditional infantry considerations have driven the Bradley's requirements. The raw capability of the vehicle and the fortitude and ingenuity of its users have to some extent compensated for the conflicting pressures in its design. However, the reluctance of the Army to see mechanized infantry as a specialty has led to the problem the vehicle has faced, as this book clearly shows.

THIS THE FINAL VOLUME OF A FOUR BOOK SET. I RECOMMEND THE ENTIRE SET. ANY RECORD COLLECTOR WILL APPRECIATE THIS SET. THE MAIN ENTRY IS STRICKLY BY MATRIX (MASTER) NUMBERS BUT DOES HAVE A TITLE AND ARTIST INDEX. THE TITLE INDEX EVEN CONTAINS THE COMPOSERS AND PUBLISHERS TO THEIR WORKS! A NICE TOUCH. THERE IS ONLY ONE THING I WOULD OF ADDED TO THIS REFERENCE: IF THE SECOND SIDE IS SEVERAL NUMBERS AHEAD IN THE MATRIX, SHOULD REFERENCE AS SEE 12345-1. I CAN REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE EFFORT TO COMPILE THIS INFORMATION THAT OTHERWISE BEEN LOST THROUGH THE YEARS.

Whittaker was admitted to the bar before graduation and became the stereotype of a demanding, workaholic attorney. In a thirty-year practice representing Midwest corporations, he became universally admired among Missouri lawyers, and the American Bar Association called him one of the best selections ever made for the Supreme Court. Yet the very characteristics that made Whittaker one of the most acclaimed choices ensured that his service would be catastrophic both for the Court and for him. By the time he left that bench, legal scholars considered his performance on the Court as one of the saddest.

Whittaker was apolitical, yet won judicial appointments requiring strong support from politicians of national strength. He was a hard-line law and order judge who was horrified by the death penalty. During the turbulent 1960s, he called for rational discussion of public issues, yet gave inflammatory speeches linking the civil rights movement to Communism. He was the epitome of his era's Main Street conservatism. Most biographies of justices deal with those who had great influence on law and society. From an institutional standpoint, however, this study of a justice who failed sharpens our understanding of how the U.S. Supreme Court differs from other judicial bodies and fills a surprising gap in the Court's history.

He challenged assumptions of America's foreign policy establishment in Heritage of Fear: Illusion and Reality in the Cold War. His books The Case for Legalizing Drugs and Drug Warriors and Their Prey became classics among drug war skeptics. Nazi Justiz probed the question of why people decide to destroy their neighbors.

Avoid this book!

I was fooled into thinking this was a serious biography of Whittaker-- it truly is not. The author is an "independent scholar" who apparently has some sort of bizarre political agenda which colors this work-- most of the book is devoted to exceedingly tendentious criticism of Whittaker, which frustrates any real attempt to understand Whittaker or even describe his life in a minimally coherent way. The book is remarkable in that it contains almost no biographical information of any interest, but is devoted to tendentious criticisms of Whittaker's opinions, writings, and speeches. Miller's analysis is wacky and totally off-point, informed mostly by the political views of a man writing a 40 years after Whittaker's departure from the Supreme Court, and contains no insight at all. This book can hardly even be called a "biography" because it contains no real attempt to describe Whittaker's life at all. Miller frequently speculates about what Whittaker "must" have been like or how he "must" have seemed to others, but his research falls far below what we should expect for any serious work. I would expect work of better quality from a high school student-- this book is that bad. This is a good example of how you can't judge a book by its cover-- the publisher of this book decided to present this as a serious biographical sketch. In fact, this is a incompetent, ignorant, and self-absorbed work by a hack author.

A Harsh Evaluation of Justice Whittaker

It is obvious from the outset that the author does not like his subject. This is one of the two biographies on Justice Whittaker currently available and they could not be two more different books in their approaches. While Craig Alan Smith in his "Failing Justice" [also reviewed on Amazon] wants to defend Whittaker, Richard Lawrence Miller takes every opportunity to take a poke at the Justice--no benefit of the doubt in evidence here. A lot of this animus appears to stem from Whittaker's close relationship with the University of Kansas City and its trustees (see the dedication to the book). Whatever the genesis, Miller wants to emphasize Whittaker's big firm background, his highly-successful private practice for business interests, his lack of enthusiasm for labor unions, and his generally conservative outlook. For Miller, Whittaker's major fault on the Supreme Court was his strict adherence to precedent and his lack of passion. More so than Smith, Miller focuses upon controversial decisions made by Whittaker while a district judge, on the Eighth Circuit, and while on the Supreme Court. The result is to suggest that Whittaker was fixated on the "Communist menace" of the 1950's, less than enthusiastic about protecting free speech, and not supportive of civil disobedience. Miller does have one advantage over Smith: he really examines the post-Court period of Whittaker during which the retired Justice made some highly controversial remarks about Martin Luther King, the civil rights movement, and unions. I found this chapter highly interesting and helpful in coming to grips with Whittaker. While not the book to read on Whittaker if you can only read one, the combination of the two together really helps fill out the reader's grasp of Whittaker, his strengths, weaknesses, and role on the Court.

About the Author

MORDECAI ROSHWALD is Professor Emeritus of Humanities at the University of Minnesota, where he taught for twenty-five years. He has published numerous scholarly articles and several books, including Humanism in Practice (1955), Level Seven (1959), and Modern Technology: The Promise and the Menace (1999).

Gary Westfahl is adjunct professor at the University of La Verne, CA. An outstanding anthology of informative essays.

Westfahl's essays in Science Fiction, Children's Literature And Popular Culture, range widely over American children's and YA popular entertainment, starting with a little known children's series but covering Superman, Horatio Algier and the Hardy boys, SF film (esp. the fifties) Star Trek and even music video in the context of film and advertising. Westfahl, a well known SF critic, allows himself more free-play in these essays. His playfulness gives rise to many intriguing speculations, connecting popular culture phenomena in convincing but previously unarticulated ways.
I greatly enjoyed each of the essays, even the first one about a now-obscure children's series that features a too good to be true boy called Charlie ("How Topsy Made Charlie Love Him," from the Better Homes and Gardens Story Book), which he analyzes from a developmental and a feminist perspective. The chapter "Giving Horatio Alger Goosebumps," supplements the Sands and Frank book referenced above with critical perspectives on both production and marketing and social contexts for YA series fiction. "Opposing War, Exploiting War: The Troubled Pacifism of Star Trek," should be read alongside Bartter's essay in Sullivan's collection, listed below. "Legends of the Fall: Going Not particularly Far Behind the Music," offer basic analyses of MTV and VH1 stories of rock star legends, asking basic questions about their accuracy and comparing different 'kinds' of stories told about these famous people. My favorite essay is "Even better than the Real Thing: Advertising, Music Videos, Postmodernism and (Eventually) Science Fiction." In this essay, he describes for us the similarities in the stories told within advertising on the media. Media-based advertising for products tells stories within which the products are set, just like music videos which are used to promote artists and to promote music sales, and film trailers use some of the same techniques to summarize or condense the film, telling a story about it that may or may not be true.
Westfahl makes a convincing argument for their inter-related development (similar to the critical argument made by Palumbo on comic books in the Sullivan collection) and this is only one of several insights provoked by this essay. As Westfahl's fifth through eleventh chapters emphasize, there are many more intersections between media which can be productively explored, from the realization of written as film to the expansion of television SF through written series fiction. More than any other sub genre, SF has adapted itself to the new media and made them an intimate link in the definition of the genre. The links between fiction and other popular culture phenomena are pervasive, fascinating, and in need of further attention. Thus, in addition to addressing age-based demarcations of SF, the critical works address defining moments in the history of SF are we know understand it's ability to expand and adapt to changing tastes, habits, and indeed needs, of its audience.
Westfahl does not attempt a summary chapter, but ends with an analysis of The Time Machine and its many permutations in cinematic productions, giving us, by example, a socio-historical perspective on the film industry that also reflects on the history of science fiction. Since Wells' story is so tied up with the history of SF as a genre and with all the media carrying the SF story, including radio, television and film, the final essay does give us some sort of summary in that it covers the earliest and the latest forms for the story.
