Fascinating account of the globalization of private finance

This book breaks with traditional wisdom by arguing that it was the states that encouraged the internationalization of private finance since 1945 rather than technological innovation or international trade. In fact, Lucatelli argues that the states did so in order not to bear the painful adjustments to macroeconomic shocks. This book is an excellent introduction for any finance course.

New insights

Did you ever ask the question why all these deregulations and liberalisations of financial markets were realised by sovereign governments? Probably not. Lucatelli's book provides fresh ideas and new insights on things finance people usually do not think about. Strongly recommended for enlarging your horizon.

A Great Little Book

To tell the truth, I wasn't expecting much when I first picked up this book. I'm a Woody fan but I thought the encyclopedic format (topics are alphabetized as in an encyclopedia) would be too superficial or unfocused. However, once I started I couldn't put it down. Actually, I did put it down because I have a busy life. But that's why this book was perfect for me. I could read it in "airtight compartments." I could read a section, get my fill, put it down, and come back to it an hour or day later and dive right in again.
I learned a lot about Woody, his movies, major themes, the people he's worked with -- and, most importantly, life in general. I'm particularly interested in the Woodman's ideas about love and relationships (yes, I need the eggs). This book allowed me to review a lot of his movies fast in an overview type of way and discern some of his patterns about "eggs" I hadn't perceived or had only perceived blurrily. In fact, I think rereading it in this way will yield newer and deeper insights each time because the author, a professor, writes with great depth and insight (yet in a very readable and economic style).
Although, as I said, I'm a Woody fan I have to admit that there were a number of his works I either didn't understand or didn't even know about. This book gave me a new appreciation to see movies I had dismissed (or simply missed) for one reason or another.
If you're a Woody fan this is a great book to have. In many ways, it transcends Woody by putting his work in the context of modern thought and art. But it's still a great Woody book and one that any thinking fan is going to enjoy.

A shakey job

A bit of a bodge job on this one. The book is supposedly about 18th and 19th century sports, but the author cannot seem to unroot himself from the 20th century, and a full 30-40% of this book has nothing to do with its subject. There are numerous errors that could have been fixed by doing better research than reading the miscellaneous drug-store bookshelf offerings listed in the bibliography. First of all, in British sports, rowing, it is not the "Doggett Coat and Dog Race", as it's called in the index, nor is it one of the 'biggest' races on the Thames: It's the Doggett Coat and Badge race and fields 6 competitors, as it has since its inception. The Thames is not a 'calm' river - it's a tidal river, and for the first 75-100 years of the race, the competitors rowed against a strong tide (maybe the author thinks the Thames barrier was invented in the 18th century?). Want to know more about the race? You won't find it here, despite the fact that it's a template for the river wager, a foundational part of 18th and 19th century British rowing. But there's a bunch of stuff about 20th century rowing. Don't expect to read anything about the boats used - he doesn't know. We get a lot of stuff about modern racing shells. Irrelevant.

Similarly the boxing: So, he gets Fleischer's book and a couple of things online. Please do not consider this as anything but a sloppy pass through of bareknuckle fighting. Where's Figg? And Mendoza was not the first to introduce science to the sport, it was Broughton who introduced blocking, stopping, retrograde motion and footwork. George Taylor, 2nd champion, introduced various fencing moves, thrust and parry, into the sport. Mendoza took these a level higher, he did not invent it. Wrestling? Slap-dash, nothing about catch-as-catch can, a basis for wrestling in Britain, Lancashire style or Cornish, again the foundation for much of the country wrestling which formed the backbone of this sport.

But, you can read all you want about sports 'invented' in the 1890s and developed in the 20th century (netball anyone)? including rules. It may have been easier for a lazy author to find, but it is is not the supposed intent of the book, and individuals looking to find ACTUAL data about 18th and 19th century sports will be either mislead, or disappointed.

These are only some examples, and it makes me pretty much disregard the rest of the book as no doubt similarly flawed. Understandably, there are only so many pages to cover these things and it's an overview book, but a great deal of the stuff irrelevant to the subject of the book could have been simply eliminated, and the space used to enlarge upon the original intent of the book, giving readers what they actually came for. The author has a pleasant, economical writing style, he doesn't waste words, he's obviously a professional, but he seems to have written this on his lunch hour, was a lazy researcher, needs a decent editor and a refocussing. He could have done so much better.

FRANK W. THACKERAY is Professor of History at Indiana University Southeast./e He is author of Antecedents of Revolution: Alexander I and the Polish Kingdom (1980) and the co-editor (with John E. Findling) of the Events That Changed the World series and the The Events That Changed America series, both published by Greenwood. Also with John E. Findling, he is co-editor of Statesmen Who Changed the World (1993). He and Findling are also series editors of the Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations series.

JOHN E. FINDLING is Professor of History at Indiana University Southeast. He is the author of Dictionary of American Diplomatic History (1980-89), Close Neighbors, Distant Friends: United States-Central American Relations (1987), and Chicago's Great World's Fairs (1995). An excellent textbook for British History

This is a wonderful textbook outlining the most important events in British History done by experts on the field. The book contains essays, each covering a different period in history, from the birth of the Industrial Revolution to the Thatcher Era.

It doesn't have the story-telling flow and imagination that, say, Simon Schama's A History of Britain does. But for a college-level textbook, it's worth the reading and gives one a greater understanding of British History.

About the Author

OSCAR CHAPUIS is former French Merchant Marine Captain who served as maritime inspector for the French High Commissioner in Indochina and as a maritime expert at the Saigon Court of Appeals. He was Professor at the Vietnam Maritime College, and he acted as a speaker on Vietnamese culture at the Multicultural Mental Health Training Program (MMHTP) at the University of South Florida. His other books include A History of Vietnam (Greenwood, 1995).

Where are the Emperors?

The title of this book got my attention, since there has not been alot written on the Vietnamese Emperors, or anything other than the war with the US for that matter. However, this book only deals with "The Last Emperors of Vietnam" in the first chapter, devoting little more than a paragraph or two for some of the Nguyen monarchs. The rest deals with the Indochina War and the political fights leading up to the intervention of America. It costs alot for a very small book and has a very misleading title. There is some good information, but most of it does not have anything to do with Vietnam's last emperors.

Having eagerly opened volume two, expecting some history told more from the Vietnamese standpoint, I finished the reading mostly feeling sorry for Oscar Chapuis, who was badly served by two self-styled "editors" at Greenwood Press. English is evidently not M. Chapuis' first language, but this is not his fault--there was allegedly an entire production "team" at Greenwood to back him up. The text, however, reads as if a French speaker was frequently driven to the dictionary to find an appropriate English word. The intended meaning is usually capable of being inferred, though sadly this is not always the case.

The French terms which are retained in the text, though usually, if not always, explained, are printed without diacritical marks, which, IMO, is a silly and needless omission.

I would have preferred to find an integrated narrative treatment--a robe without seam--of the period covered. Instead, this is more of a biographical or historical dictionary. The result is that the same event is too often covered at two points in the text, with slightly different information provided at those two places, or perhaps from two different perspectives. This manner of presentation also blurs the chronology of events at times.

As to the accuracy of the information provided, I am often left having to take M. Chapuis' word for the accuracy of his information--or of the information which his two Vietnamese historian colleagues supplied to him. Yes, there are footnotes, a fact for which the book is praised, but here again there are problems. First, there are too many very short "expository" footnotes, which may provide something as trivial as the translation of a Vietnamese word. IMO, there is no need to make the reader turn over several pages and find the right footnote to be told something that could have been smoothly and artfully written in the text itself. Conversely, the actual citations fall short of backing up some of the critical statements made in the book. I was left at one point, for instance, knowing only that some information came from "French police" reports (vol. 2, p. 25), which were unsourced; at another point I was told that there was an "incident," but was given no clue as to where to find further information on it.

Whatever light M. Chapuis sheds on Vietnam, China seems to have remained a Forbidden City as far as its geography, history or historiography are concerned. To begin at the trivial end of the spectrum, the Yang-tze River does not empty into the South China Sea (p. 32), and the Boxer Incident of 1899-1902 most certainly did not occur in 1859 (pp. 2 and 48-9). More seriously, the author and his Vietnamese documentation-providers seem unaware of a Confucian convention in writing history; in its purest form, it is that a successful ruler must be portrayed as virtuous and an unsuccessful one has to be shown to be evil, regardless of their actual characters. This is because history as written by Confucians is a moral exercise, not necessarily a factual one. Students of Chinese history will be aware of the stereotypical nature of character portraits of "Good First Emperors" and "Bad Last Emperors." In real life, I believe it is possible for a good person to fail and an evil one to succeed, and when I am presented with character assassination like that of Ton That Thuyet, who fails and therefore "must" go insane (pp. 22-23), I am entitled to believe that this description is not necessarily accurate.

Even French history, however, is not unmarked by things which a truly alert "History Editor" would have corrected, such as letting the phrase "drole de guerre" stand for all of WW II when it it only part of it, or terminating the Fourth Republic in the wrong year.

To conclude, I would praise M. Chapuis for his laudable ambition, and fault the Greenwood staffers for doing such a poor job of helping him realize it, and then having the chutzpah to demand an outrageous price for such a shoddy product. Joseph Buttinger's old but ground-breaking "The Smaller Dragon: A Political History of Vietnam" (1958) is still the model to be emulated.

Slave narratives were one of the earliest forms of African American writing. These works, autobiographical in nature, later fostered other pieces of African American autobiography. Since the rise of Black Studies in the late 1960s, leading critics have constructed black lives and letters as antitheses of the ways and writings of mainstream American culture. According to such thinking, black writing stems from a set of experiences very different from the world of whites, and black autobiography must therefore differ radically from heroic white American tales. But in pointing to differences between black and white autobiographical works, these critics have overlooked the similarities. This volume argues that the African American autobiography is a continuation of the epic tradition, much as the prose narratives of voyage by white Americans in the nineteenth century likewise represent the evolution of the epic genre. The book makes clear that the writers of black autobiography have shared and shaped American culture, and that their works are very much a part of American literature.

An introductory essay provides a theoretical framework for the chapters that follow. It discusses the origins of African American autobiography and the larger themes of the epic tradition that are common to the works of both black and white authors. The book then pairs representative African American autobiographies with similar works by white writers. Thus the volume matches Olaudah Equiano's slave narrative with The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave with Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast, and Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl with Fanny Fern's Ruth Hall. The study indicates that these various works all recognize the importance of learning as a means for attaining freedom. The final chapter provides a broad survey of the African American autobiography.

The Industrial Revolution changed how people worked and lived in the U.S. This reference work is designed to help students understand the concepts, events, and persons that brought about those all-encompassing changes.

The alphabetically arranged entries are enhanced by suggested readings (including Web sites), black-and-white illustrations, and cross-references. Readers can learn about such diverse topics as the American Bimetallic League, the Gold Standard Act of 1900, the Hay market Riot, the Molly Maguires, and the panics of 1819, 1837, 1857, 1873, and 1907. Inventors, industrialists, politicians, and other key players are profiled, as are major corporations that led the way. Concepts like Infrastructure and Vertical integration are explained, and significant legislation and landmark cases related to industrialism in the U.S. are reported.

The chronology (from the opening of the first coal mine in America in 1756 to 1922's landmark Bailey v. Drexel Furniture Company decision ) and the bibliography (arranged by topic) help put the period in perspective.

Although this is a useful resource for persons already knowledgeable about the topic, its index makes it difficult to hone in on specifics. For example, Richard Hoe, who revolutionized newspaper printing, merits a lengthy article and is mentioned in the entry on the printing press, but the index does not include a heading for newspapers. Frederick W. Taylor has his own entry, which calls him the "leading efficiency engineer of the Industrial Revolution in the United States," but the researcher not knowing his name cannot find him as there is no index heading for efficiency. And, because students frequently need to find significant inventions and inventors, it would have been nice to have them clustered in the index.

Nevertheless, this is a handy compilation of information about a significant period in our history. It should be available to people studying that era, along with The Industrial Revolution: Opposing View points (Greenhaven, 1998). Recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate libraries. JAMES S. OLSON is Distinguished Professor of History at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He is the author of numerous reference works, including Historical Dictionary of the 1960s (Greenwood, 1999) and Historical Dictionary of the 1970s (Greenwood, 1999).
