Ward's criteria for inclusion were: accuracy of information, literary quality, realistic and believable portrayal of people, settings that are integral to the action and characters, reasonable story resolution, and audience (ranging from kindergarten through grade 12). Subjects are clearly marked at the end of each entry for easy cross-referencing. Ward has done an excellent job with this bibliography. The annotations are honest, indicating both the strengths and weaknesses of each title, and the multiple indexes add greatly to the book's usefulness. This is an area of fiction that is often requested and many times difficult to satisfy. Margins indeed does give voice to the children feeling isolated due to their differences and provides librarians with a way to hear those voices and to speak to those in need.

Providing suggested reading for children, this book about disabilities is notable for its currency. It lists 200 books for children and young adults published from 1990 to 2001. The introduction gives the criteria for the choices that are offered. The juvenile fiction covered includes picture books, chapter books for middle-schoolers, and young adult novels as well as poetry. A few of the books included are nonfiction. Books are presented alphabetically by author, and each entry gives publisher, age level, ISBN number, price, and annotation followed by subject headings. Title, author, and ages indexes end the book--the ages index is an outstanding feature. This resource is a welcome addition to the growing literature about disabilities of all kinds. RBB
