Kurt Vonnegut: A Critical Companion (Critical Companions to Popular Contemporary Writers), by Thomas Marvin, Thomas F. Marvin

With a career spanning 50 years, Kurt Vonnegut is one of the most prolific and popular American writers of the 20th century. Though his works have often met with mixed reviews, and have been difficult to categorize, his status of cultural icon and one of the most important contemporary novelists is well established. This critical companion, perfect for students, skillfully guides readers through seven of Vonnegut's most important novels including Player Piano (1952), Mother Night (1961), Cat's Cradle (1963), and Slaughterhouse Five (1969). A full chapter is devoted to each work, with clear analysis of plot, character development, thematic concerns, symbolism, and a close critical reading. A chapter on the life of Kurt Vonnegut gives an up-to-date biography, with interesting details relating the facts of his life to his writings. The Literary Contexts section, devoted to examining issues of genre, influences and themes in Vonnegut's writing, adds to a fuller understanding of the man and his literary works.

This exceptionally well-written Critical Companion will help students and interested readers appreciate Vonnegut's most important and popular novels. Close critical readings offer feminist, Marxist, and new historicist perspectives on these works. A bibliography helps students undertaking research identify additional sources for biographical and critical information, and provides reviews and a comprehensive list of Vonnegut's publications to date.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up-Although not exhaustive, this volume covers the author's major works and offers a wide range of critical discourse on them. The opening chapters provide biographical background. Marvin then examines Player Piano; The Sirens of Titan; Mother Night; Cat's Cradle; God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater; Slaughterhouse-Five; and Bluebeard. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the novel, followed by sections on plot development, character development, and thematic issues. The chapters on Player Piano and Cat's Cradle also discuss symbolism, and the one on Slaughterhouse-Five describes Vonnegut's narrative technique. Each chapter concludes with a "close critical reading" of the text. These sections are a strong point of the volume because different critical perspectives are explained and employed. For example, The Sirens of Titan is given a structuralist reading, Cat's Cradle receives an intertextual reading, and Slaughterhouse-Five is approached from a cultural poetics perspective. A clear, concise introduction to literary criticism.

In saying this I make no claims to superior insight. Marvin's book
By William J. Deangelis
For decades I have taught a course called "Philosophical Ideas in Literature". Each time I taught the course I used one or two of Vonnegut's novels - cycling among, THE SIRENS OF TITAN, MOTHER NIGHT, CAT'S CRADLE, BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS, and GOD BLESS YOU, MR. ROSEWATER. Suffice to say I have thought about Vonnegut's work and it's significance more than most people - possibly even as much as Thomas Marvin. In saying this I make no claims to superior insight.

Marvin's book, KURT VONNEGUT: A CRITICAL COMPANION, is for the most part a good one. I would say that most of its interpretations of and claims about the work are accurate and helpful, occasionally achieving the sort of penetration and illumination that a sensible reader might not come to on his/her own. What he says he says clearly. The work is entirely unpretentious and engaging. There are also, albeit rarely, what I regard as mistakes - some of which take the reader wide of the mark. These concern, for the most part Marvin's remarks about Vonnegut's attitudes toward religion. Marvin flatly brands Vonnegut as "an atheist", which is certainly a mistake. Vonnegut described himself as a "Christ-loving agnostic" - yet even this self-description, I think, slyly disguises a stance which can, in a way that must be qualified, considered religious. Of course, Vonnegut had little respect for the organized religions of our time. In SIRENS, his narrator, describes our time as one in which "[g]imcrack religions were big business". Such a pronouncement does not, however, express a rejection of religion. Rather, in the context of that novel, it suggests to me a counterfeit of more authentic forms of religiosity which have been lost in our time but which once existed and, perhaps, might exist again. This, I think is a closer approximation to Vonnegut's stance. Marvin is right to see Vonnegut as a critic of culture and as a thinker who sees our time as one of cultural decline. For Vonnegut, this decline might well include the trivialization and co-opting of genuine religious feeling The preface to BREAKFAST puts this beyond dispute. Vonnegut complains there, not only that "I have no culture", but that in the absence of a culture, "Nothing is sacred". Beyond this, a careful reading of SIRENS, I believe, reveals a work that is shot full of intimations of a religious sort which are all suggestive that Vonnegut did not during his life reject religion, but rather respected religious possibilities and lamented the loss of them in his time.

Other than that, I enjoyed reading this book. I usually found many of his conclusions similar to my own. A few of them expressed ideas I had not come to on my own which I found helpful. To focus on one: I think Marvin is especially good in explaining the continuing and ever-changing role of the character, Kilgore Trout, who appears in many of the novels and who seems to serve as a kind of alter-ego for Vonnegut himself.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who has read Vonnegut and might enjoy reading considering an overall interpretation of his work written by someone who is knowledgeable, clearheaded, and intelligently attentive to his subject

balanced, concise
By Patrick Moore LMT Educator
The author has no axe to grind.

Chapters are: a short biography of Kurt Vonnegut, including a number of details that help make sense of his work,
a chapter on the literariness of Vonnegut's work, the bones of Satire,
one chapter each on handful of Vonnegut's novels.

I especially valued the chapters on Sirens of Titan, Cat's Cradle, and God Bless You Mr. Rosewater.
