Others, such as the Mirabal sisters, founders of a resistance movement against a repressive Dominican Republic regime, and Carmen Naranjo, a prolific Costa Rican author and champion of culture, merit the wider recognition offered here.
An excellent introduction detailing the status of Latin American women in the twentieth century is the ideal framework for appreciating the struggles of these women. In the entries, information given includes family and background details, education, influences, obstacles faced and overcome, and achievements. Edited by two professors from the Arizona State University in Tempe, this biographical dictionary of Latin American women is "intended to increase their visibility, to raise consciousness about the issues they confront, and . . . to honor their daily struggle."More than 60 scholars from the fields of Spanish, Portuguese, women's studies, and Latin American studies have contributed the 72 entries.
According to the preface, inclusion was limited to Spanish-and Portuguese-speaking Latin American women. The editors acknowledge that this decision prevented the inclusion of notable Hispanic women who write and speak primarily in English. The editors consulted other experts in the field to arrive at the decision of which women to include. Internationally known Latin American women such as Eva Peron, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Carmen Miranda, and Frida Kahlo are here, as are many less familiar individuals. However, Griselda Gambaro (Argentine author) and Nora Astorga (Nicaraguan revolutionary and diplomat) have been omitted. Most of the women covered were born after 1900.
Arranged in alphabetical order with an average length of four pages, each entry includes a brief further readings list. More thanhalf of the entries contain a black-and-white photo of the subject. Listed at the beginning of each entry is the country, the birth date (if known), and the death date (if applicable) of the subject, along with all applicable fields of endeavor (e.g., dancer, author, political activist). The two appendixes make use of these facts--one is arranged by country and the other is arranged by fields of endeavor. The short bibliography at the end of the book is arranged by broad subject area and includes recent publications but no Websites. The 12-page index is well done and also indexes the introduction. The entries are written in a style that is more popular than scholarly and, as a result, makes the information accessible to the general public.
Biographical information on several of the authors and artists listed in this book can be found in specialized sources like The Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature (Fitzroy Dearborn, 1997) and Grove's Encyclopedia of Latin American and Caribbean Art (1999). And although information on the internationally known women can be found in many sources, the majority of women included here are not listed in other English-language biographical sources, such as Gale's Dictionary of Hispanic Biography (1995). This new source, along with Notable Latin American Women: Twenty-nine Leaders, Rebels, Poets, Battlers andSpies, 1500-1900 (McFarland, 1995), makes a significant contribution to the fields of women's studies and Latin American studies. The editors have met their goals as stated, and this volume is highly recommended for public, academic, and high-schoollibraries. RBB
