Both traditions have continued in one form or another to the present day, and Realistic and Naturalistic novelists include some of America's most significant authors, such as Sherwood Anderson, Saul Bellow, Ambrose Bierce, Willa Cather, Theodore Dreiser, Ralph Ellison, and Jack London. This reference includes biographical and critical entries for more than 120 American Naturalistic and Realistic novelists.
An introductory essay discusses the history of the Realistic and Naturalistic traditions, points to the difficulty of defining them, and surveys the many authors who have been associated with the two movements. The entries that follow are arranged alphabetically to facilitate use. Each includes basic biographical information and a narrative overview of the writer's educational background, professional career, and published works. The writer's works are briefly discussed in relation to the Realistic and Naturalistic traditions. Entries include primary and secondary bibliographies, and the volume closes with a list of works for further reading.

According to the introduction, naturalism and realism arose as literary movements in the U.S. during the nineteenth century. Realistic writers such as Theodore Dreiser, Joyce Carol Oates, and Edith Wharton "attempt to depict accurately the world, or at least part of it, in which they live." Naturalism is closely related to realism, except that writers "focus on the poor or the unfortunate primarily to gain the reader's sympathy and understanding." Writers of naturalism include Stephen Crane, James T. Farrell, and Frank Norris. Some 125 writers, many of whom fall into both categories, are discussed in this volume. Chronologically, coverage begins with Caroline Kirkland (1801-1864), who wrote about frontier life, and extends to contemporary authors such as Larry Heinemann and Toni Morrison.
Entries are arranged alphabetically by author and vary in length from two to seven pages. Information includes birth and, when appropriate, death dates and a brief summary of the writer's life and works. These readable summaries are more descriptive than analytical, though they do generally provide some insight into the writer's relationship to realistic or naturalistic traditions. Each entry concludes with a list of the writer's representative works and some secondary references. Following the entries are a selected bibliography and an index listing all authors mentioned within the dictionary as part of an entry or as a reference.
Many of these writers are covered in greater detail in resources such as Scribner's American Writers series. American Realists and Naturalists (1982), volume 12 of Gale's Dictionary of Literary Biography series, covers 42 turn-of-the-century writers, most of them born in the 1870s. With its specific context and wide range, American Naturalistic and Realistic Novelists is a useful supplemental tool for academic or high-school libraries that support courses on these authors. RBB

E.C. APPLEGATE is a Professor in the School of Journalism, College of Mass Communication, at Middle Tennessee State University. His articles and reviews have been published in several academic journals, including Journalism Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, American Journalism, and Journalism History.
