Grade 9 Up-Through a dry and repetitive text, this book describes life in western Europe during the early Middle Ages (roughly A.D. 600-900) and also provides information on Charlemagne's life and contributions and the Carolingian Renaissance. Several maps, charts, and black-and-white photos and reproductions are included. A glossary and a lengthy, annotated list for further reading are appended. The index is inadequate, making it difficult to locate specific information (e.g., there's no entry for "Superstition," even though there's a full-page section with that heading; to find "Food," it's necessary to look under "Common people (life conditions)/food"; etc.). This title is not interesting enough to read straight through and is too hard to use for reports, making it of interest to only the most dedicated medieval scholars.

Excellent guide to the period.

This is an exceptionally well written book which includes many fascinating details about the period that one might not find elsewhere. It's written for the lay reader but it is solid. It's also up to date in that it was copyrighted in 2002. And the author is able to discuss simply and clearly different historical theories about what went on in these times. I love reading this type of history book purely for pleasure. But this book will be of interest, I think, to any writer of historical fiction who wants to learn more about the subject, and also to young people studying history in high school or college. The book is expensive but I think it's worth it.

Excellent

Easy reading for anyone. There are more academic books on this subject but this contains lots of information for someone interested in the era and readable at the HS level. I strongly recommend every high school world history teacher read this book. Covers everything from the Royal court to the life of the common person in the 8th century. Religion, economy, and the military are given chapters.
Very useable bibliography. Not big, but, has short opinions as to usefulness that match my opinions of them.
I wish I'd had this book when I was a HS student just falling in love with history.
