Grade 9 Up-A look at the era as defined by popular culture. Browne and Kreiser begin with overview chapters on daily life for the general population, and then examine in detail 10 aspects of culture including advertising, clothing and fashion, food, leisure activities, travel and transportation, and several categories of performing and fine arts. The authors describe both the trends and important people that shaped popular culture and the impact of the war and its aftermath. For example, they relate how baseball became America's pastime when Civil War soldiers, who learned to play while in camps, carried the game home with them at the war's end. Each chapter is well documented. The captioned black-and-white photos and reproductions of period illustrations and advertisements are dark and add little to the text. Most books on this period focus on the battles and political struggles. Browne and Kreiser look at the myriad changes during the Civil War and Reconstruction that were the genesis of our industrial and cultural modern America. RAY B. BROWNE is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, which he founded. He is editor of the Journal of Popular Culture and the Journal of American and Comparative Cultures. He is the author and editor of over 70 books and has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association since their beginnings.

Another treasure trove

This volume in the "American Popular Culture Through History" series not only seems to have less errors than either of the other ones I've read to date (see The Gilded Age (American Popular Culture Through History) and The Antebellum Period (American Popular Culture Through History)), but also overflows with information I'd never encountered before--which isn't easy for any book to do, given that I've been studying the social history of the 19th Century for the best part of 40 years! Among the tidbits garnered from its pages: that "type girls" (typewriter operators) in 1875 could make $10-$20/wk. (a very good wage, especially for a woman, in that day and age); that by the early '70's, girls constituted the majority of graduates from the rapidly proliferating high schools; that most public buildings of the period were designed not by architects but by civil engineers (a species I'd hardly realized existed at the time); that Civil War soldiers were as addicted to coffee as any species of humanity you could care to meet (Yanks were reputed to drink half a gallon or more a day if they could get it); and that there was a considerable vogue for French (in translation) and English stories of crime and detection during the years 1860-80. The authors' examination of early advertising is especially detailed and intriguing, and their description of the new cast-iron buildings which came into prominence during the Civil War is the clearest I've found yet; now I feel that I really know what a cast-iron building was and how it worked. A telling statistic at the very beginning of the book puts the casualty figures of the War into perspective: an equivalent loss of life today would result in 5,500,000 Americans killed and wounded!
True, there do seem to be a few mistakes in the text: the authors maintain that "American house styles east of the [Alleghenies] tended to be two-storey...[and] one room deep" (the several reprints of contemporary plan books that I own contradict this completely), that dime novels were introduced in the 1850's (it's true that cheap paperbacks were in existence well before that, but the first true dime novel--A. S. Stephens's "Malaeska," published by Beadle--came out only in 1860); that "towns located too far from the [railroad] main lines" tended not to see travelling circuses after the War (in fact the old-fashioned wagonbound "mud show" continued to crisscross the hinterlands into the early 20th Century); that the peripatetic medicine-show man "possibly" included "cocaine or other dangerous drugs" in his nostrums (actually, because he sold direct to his customers, unlike the pharmaceutical companies responsible for the "patent medicines" that packed every drugstore, it was to his interest to keep his concoctions relatively harmless, except perhaps for some alcohol to give them kick: he wanted to be able to come back to the same towns the next year and sell more product without risking being tarred and feathered because a past patient had died of his goods); and that "the favored vehicle [on the Oregon trail] was the Conestoga wagon" (most emigrants actually preferred to use the smaller, nimbler "prairie schooner"). They also imply that the piano became popular only after the War, which isn't true: though expensive, quantities of them were being manufactured and sold in this country as early as the '40's. On the whole, however, this book is the most accurate and perhaps the most interesting of the three I've sampled up to now, and like its predecessors it has provided me with quantities of new information. It also has clear, easy-to-read type and a long bibliography of suggested further reading. Of course, a volume of this length can't possibly cover in detail *every* aspect of "popular culture" in its focal period, but it's certainly a good title to start out with. Everyone who has an interest in the way our ancestors lived during this critical era should read it.
