ANDREW G. TRAVER is Assistant Professor of Ancient and Medieval History at Southeastern Louisiana University. He has published widely on the ancient, medieval, and early modern periods. His research interests focus on the transmission of ancient thought into the medieval period, particularly the rediscovery of ancient learning in the 12th and 13th centuries.

One of two books for study of the ancients

This book a is "A Biographical Dictionary," "From Polis to Empire- The Ancient World c. 800 B.C.- A.D. 500." It is about the people of this time period. As a guide, this is one of the books to shine some light on the path to the study of the ancients.
The other book is by Mr. Michael Grant called "A Guide To The Ancient World, A Dictionary of Classical Place Names."
Note: this book is "A Dictionary of Classical Place Names." The period covered is the early first millennium B.C., until the later fifth century A.D., when the western Roman empire fell or was transformed (about 410 A.D.).
A lot of place names, Civilizations, and people will covered by both books. Both books are great general references for the study of the ancients.
