The book consists mostly of a fairly mindless recitation of the results of various studies on various issues (e.g., anti-oxidants). The author's own analysis, critical thought, conclusions are kept to a minimum, offering no help to the reader in making sense of the studies, their implications and limitations. The coverage is selective; some important "controversies in food and nutrition", e.g., raw vs. pasteurized milk, high-fat/low-carb issue, organic vs local vs grass-fed, did not make it into the book at all, even though these are directly relevant to the material that is covered. All in all, a dated and useless little volume.
For a lay reader, a more helpful overview of the actual issues in food and nutrition -- including production, distribution, preparation, health effects -- can be gleaned from Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food), Daphne Miller (The Jungle Effect), Nina Planck (Real Food), Mary Enig (Eat Fat/Lose Fat), Sally Fallon (Nourishing Traditions), etc.
